Sec- retary and Treasurer John J. Higgins made the following report of the’ operations of the school for the past quarter: Enroll- ment, white, 3,360; colored, 1,781; total en- rollment, 5,141, Average attendance, white, 2,108; colored, 1,185; total average attend- ance, 3,204. Expenses, white, $10,120.02; colored, $1,826.84; total expenses, $11,947.76. The colored schools were ordered to be closed on the lith of May. The exact time of closing the white schoolg has not yet been determined. The board will hold its next meeting on May 3 to consider petitions for new school houses, repairs, furniture, &c. In the orphans’ court yesterday the fol- lowing business was transacted: Basil Moxley and Isaac W. Moxley, executors of Isaac Moxley, deceased, filed list of sales of personal property of Wm. A. Hempstone and Harry D, Hempstone, ex- ecutors of Armistead T. Hempstone, de- ceased, filed inventory of personal estate of said deceased and were authorized to sell the same at public or private sale. Charles W. Huguely and Mary E. Cissell, administrators of John H. Cissell, deceas- ed, filed final releases of distributees of said estate. Zachariah A, Briggs, Wm. D. Gloyd and D. T. Gloyd, passed his third account of the estate of each of said wards. ‘The county commissioners at a regular meeting, held yesterday, after hearing a report of Sheriff Mullican and Samuel Riggs of Rockville, attorney to the board, in regard to the Coxey army, at Hagers- town, came to the conclusion that there was no necessity of making any prepara- tions for their reception and entertainment when they arrive in this county. The army is represented as a very peaceful and in- offensive aggregation of deluded creatures. They are expected to arrive here on Satur- day, and it is hoped that their stay will be short. No arrangements have yet heen made for a camping ground. B. J. and W. D. White, two of Coxey’s men, came here on Monday, and, after a stay of a few hours, left for Washington. The “Un- known,” the “veiled lady” and “Cheeky” Childs also arrived about the same time and left for Washington on Tuesday. On Monday night the “Unknown” made a characteristic address to a smail crowd in front of one of the hotels. The address was a mixture of politics, morals and re- ligion, clothed in rather disjointed English, and failed to arouse any enthusiasm. The meeting was finally broken up by the music of a traveling band of minstrels, whose melodies attracted the audienca, leaving the speaker solitary ani alone, The dedication of the new St. John’s Catholic Church, near Forest Glen, en Sunday next, promises to be an interesting event, and will be attended by many from this section of the county. Cardinal Gib- bons, Bishop Keane of the Catholic Uni- versity and many other prominent digni- taries of the church will e part in the exercises. The dedicatory services will take place during the forenoon and will be followed by the rite of confirmation to @ large number of children, embracing those of all the churches of the parish. et Til Health Led to Suicide. Ludger Laroche, aged forty-five years, head of the French department of the in- terior on the island of Martinique, com- mitted suicide at New York yesterday morn- ing by turning on the gas in the Hotel de Paris, No. 75 Christopher street. M. La- roche had been in very poor health, and he left Martinique to reside for a time in the French fishing colony of St. Pierre de Miquelon. His strength did not re- turn and he decided to leave for France. He arrived at New York Monday on the steamer from Halifax. His sickness is be- leved to have led to his suicide. — we ——— The War Ship Aquidaban Raised. Admiral Goncalves telegraphs to the Bra- zilian government from Desterro that he had succeeded in raising the insurgent war ship Aquidaban, which was sunk by the Brazilian torpedo boat Gustavo Sampaio in the naval engagement which took place off Desterro on April 16.
