The meeting was called to order by Mr. F. H. Smith, who was after- ward made permanent chairman, and Mr. R. E. White was elected secretary. After a brief address by the chairman, nominations ‘were declared in order. Mr. A. R. Holden nominated Mr. R. E. White for commission- @, and Mr. C. E. Beech nominated Mr. H. ©. Emmons. Mr. Emmons declined the momination on the ground that he had been ann gpl of working against the labor ele- ment, and would, consequently, meet with gome opposition. He favored Mr. White. Mr. Geo. N. Walker was then nominated for commissioner by Mr. Marion Fowler. Mr. John E. Latimer, who had been ap- to fill the vacancy in the board oc- easioned by the resignation of his brother, Mr. Thomas H. Latimer, was placed in momination by Dr. Wells. Messrs. Granlich and A. R. Holden were appointed tellers and the vote was announced as follows: For town commissioners: R. E. White, 35; J: EB. Dr. Wells said that no doubt a large number of tramps would be going the town within the next fifteen Gays, that some means should be devised to (oma property, and it would be well to we five or ten citizens on guard, in case of need. On motion, the meeting adjourned and another was immediately held to take aa Coxey matter into consideration. Mr. H. Smith was made chairman of the Mr. Hickey suggested that the Stone enroll themselves and offer their @ervices to the commissioners, and that the commissioners select what men they want- ed for duty. Mr. Smith thought that there ought to be at least a hundred men to cail pon in case of necessity. Mr. Burnside tht that if the citizens were to organ- would be no trouble in securing arms from the War Department. Mr. A. R. Holden was of the opinion that @ military company of a hundred or more citizens should be organized and drilled, as such a company would have more effect the Coxeyites than a number of men ith revolvers. The question of arresting locking up all the tramps and vagrants Lae violating the municipal laws was discussed, and Mr. Carr, the police wanted to know if a large num- of them were caught and tried where ey would be placed. Mr. Combs said that Hyattsville was without a lock-up, which the new charter provided for, and that it was necessary to take steps to se- ure one. Dr. Wells replied that a lock-up @ould not be built until the June levy was made, and he hoped that before that time Coxey’s army would be down the Poto- ae. Emmons said that there were no doubt many good men in Coxey’s army who had souls, and were so unfortunate as to be out of work, and that such people should be Properly treated when they committed no Offense. In importance in Washington The Star comes first and is probably not only the most conspicuous and prosperous daily in ‘Washington, but is without doubt the best appreciated and best patronized evening newspaper in the United States. In point of circulation it is not reached by any other evening paper that is sold for more than one cent anywhere in America. The circulation of The Star is confined almost exclusively to Washington. It is claimed for it, and probably truthfully claimed, that no other newspaper in the country goes into so large a percentage of all the houses within a radius of twenty miles from the office of publication. The Star has enjoyed unprecedented Prosperity for twenty-five years, and is one of the very few papers that has failed to advance its advertising rates in propor- tion to its growth in circulation, influence and popularity with the community in which it is issued. Considering its character, influence and circulation, its advertising rates are ex- ceedingly low, being matched in this re- spect by no more than two or three news- papers issued in other sections. The class of advertising it carries is of the best. The value of this paper to an advertiser, all things considered, and taken in con- nection with the comparative cost of ad- vertising in it, places it not lower down than third in a list of all the best daily papers published in the United States, and in making out such a list a well-informed advertiser will have great difficulty in de- eiding upon even so small a number as two to place in advance of The Star. He may even fail to fix upon one, ee Forest Fires in New Jersey. ‘The forest fire which started in New Jer- sey Wednesday and raged all day and right, covering a distance of fifteen miles, is now under control. Hundreds of thou- sands of feet of lumber have been destroy- ed. The loss will reach $100,000. AUCTION SALES. FUTURE DAYS. RATCLIFFE, DARR & CO., AUCTIONEERS. CHANCERY SALB OF or. THAT VALUABLE TRE.
