Harp | and Elmer J. Smith, publishers and pro- Prietors of the local republican organ, the Examiner, on a charge of criminal libel, Preferred by Capt. Q. 8. J. Beckley of the Prederick Riflemen. The writ was sworn ut before Magistrate Edward Hewes, and served by Constable Jacob Brengle, the ac- cused being released in their own recog- nizance for a hearing on Friday next. The alleged libel appeared in the course of an article in the Examiner reflecting on the democratic party managers in this county. Politics is believed to be behind the whole matter. It is now well assured that the state en- campment of the Maryland National Guard will be held this summer at Frederick Junc- | tion, where it was held in 1889. Frederick has held several meetings to discuss the | matter, raised a fund of money and sent gommittees to invite the camp here, and her efforts seem very likely to succeed. The long talked of Frederick and Middle- town electric railroad, which is to extend from Frederick to Middictown, a distance of eight miles across the Catoctin moun- | tain, has again been revived, and it now geems probable that work upon the road will begin the coming summer. The in- gorporators of the road held a meeting Monday on the top of the mountain, and formally organized by electing Geo.’ Wm. Smith president, D. E. Kefauver vice pres. ident, Dr. Upton A. Sharette secreta: Herman L. Routyahn treasurer and C. 8. Levy counsel. + The company is composed entirely of Frederick people, and they will | make an effort to build the road without the aid of outside capital. On the top of the Mountain a summer hotel and park and | observatory wil! be located. | A half-breed Canactan Indian, giving the fame of Honore J. Jaxon, passed through | lerick Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock | on his way to Washington to await the coming of Coxey’s army. He said that he had been offered the marshalship of Cox- e¥’s cohorts, but decided not to accept, and left Massillon, Ohio, a half hour ahead of | them. He is a graduate of Toronto Unt-| versity, and has made a study of social Questions and of the Indian problem. He | has traveled alone and on foot, living on Oatmeal and sleeping on the roadside at night. He wears long hair, a belt, slouch hat and loose coat and carries an ax, which he uses to chop wood for the fire over which he cooks his oatmeal. He left in a storm of rain and hail for Ridgev and expects to reach Washington on V nesday. He says he wants to see whether & pilgrimage to Washington is possible, | and that he may lead a host of Indians to present to Congress in person their claims | for better treatment. ——.___ ROCKVILLE.
