Probably an Outdoor Competitive Drill—Young Ladies’ Battalion at the Eastern—Notes, As time goes on the likelihood of the ane nual company competitive drill of the regi- ment being an outdoor affair grows strong- er. The base ball park, at the head of 7th street, will probably be the scene of the field day, as the ball team is scheduled to play in other cities on several convenient days during the month of May. Should the drill be held, as proposed, it is hoped to make it a complimentary affair. This, and the fact that the seating capacity is 4,000, will insure the attendance of a large crowd. The only drawback is that the affair must necessarily occupy two days, as it has been found impossible to arrange such a program: that nine companies can pass before the judges in one afternoon. Maj. Ross is con- | sulting with Lieut. French and other army | officers in regard to a program that will embrace a number of spectacular features, The Musical Afternoo Dr. Lane is enthusiastic over the success of the recent musical afternoon at the Cen- tral School. He is of the opinion that the |movelty will expand to large proportions, and thinks that eventually a big hall will be secured in this city and the public permit- ted to listen to good music for a smail ad- mission fee. This has already been done, | according to the doctor. In Chicago Theo- |dore Thomas and in Boston the Orchestra have educated chonanake pemee ally in that way. The only thing of a sim- ilar nature that Washington has enjoyed fs summer opera, but that music cannot be said to be of a high class. The object is to have the best, and to have it cheap. The musicales at the High School, Dr. Lane Says, influence not only the school, but the homes as weil, for many members of the families of the pupils attend them. Tae next one in the series occurs on Wednesday, April 11, aiecty after acho! hours, when Schumann and Gounod wil! One company assembles on Tuesdays, the other Ys, and on Fridays both meet for Indian club practice. The maneuvers | are under the direction of Sergt. Riorden, a young gentleman of marked ability in that line. The drill has proved most bene- tick to the young ladies and their precision of movement anu ca greatly benefited theresy. ne" nas been Capt. Ogden of company B has resigned his commission. The students have also had the pleasure of listening to Miss Jane Meade Welch, who spoke on her early | American history, dwelling particularly on points concerning Capt. John Smith. A number of young but able orators have developed of late among the pupils of the , Eastern School. Miss Kelly and Messra, | Fitzpatrick and Murphy delivered interest- | ing addresses on current topics before their ; fellow pupils, at regular intervals duriag | the past few weeks. Notes. After consulting with Miss Scammell, the music teacher, Dr. Lane has come to the conclusion that the Central School is not possessed of sufficient musical talent to make the production of an operetta at the coming May concert feasible. Therefore, it is probable that “The Rivals” will, after sll, be the chief feature of the entertainment. The annual spring entertainment at the castern will take place this year in May. Mr. Sites states that it will not be as elabor- ate as those presented in former years, and will only occupy one evening, instead of two, as heretoiore. Both companies of ca- dets at the Eastern are keeping up their membership admirably, and intend to ac- complish wonders at the annual company competitive drill. Probably the most remarkable political address of the year was that issued yester- day afternoon the democratic leaders of Minnesota through the Democratic Associa= of Minnesota. It say it is useless to disguise the fact that our party is confronted with serious peril. It ts | time for plain words; silence now is disloy | 2lty to our party and its cause. In less than two years after winning the most com- | plete victory any party ever won, while in | full possession of powers then given us, we present the appearance of a defeated party, while our opponents, routed in the ‘battle, wear ail the aire of victory. What nas wrought this astounding change; whence comes this peril? Not from our opponent hot from the brawling horde of protecuion- ists whom we met and overthrew in 1892; but from malignant and treacherous im- fluences, allied with weakness or cowandice, within ourown ranks. * * © © © © } Who are these men who have interposed in able obstacles and opposition, and made a failure due to our fauit and neglect? These are the men, names fit to stand alone | alongside of Benedict Arnold in the annals of our country: Senator Calvin 8, Brice of Ohio, David B. Hill and Edward Murphy, ir. of New York; John B. McPherson and James Smith, jr., of New Jersey; Arthur P. Gorman und Charles H. Gibson of Mary- land, John x. Camden of West Virginia, Donelson Caffrey d Edward D. White of Louisiana, John J. Morgan and James L, Pugh of Ala%ama ese are the men who wear the mask of democrats that they may the better betray our cause; these are they who have wrought this marvelous change, putting our party in the attitude of defeat giving to our opponents that of Vice ‘The address concludes with an appeal to democrat it to be discouraged, for demo- | crats everywhere to det ine and proclaim | that th attle, once begun, shall not end until every c mn shall be secure in the un- trammeled right to what he will, where he will and of whom he will, exchanging with- ut let or hindrance the products of his la- bor for those his fellow laborers any where in the wide world. +o Small Proves an Alibi.
