Military Academy in 1837, appointed a leutenant of artillery, and assigned to duty at Fort Monroe, Va. He saw service tn the Florida war in 1837-38, and in the latter year resigned from the army and began the practice of law in Virginia. Subse- Gen. Jubai A. Early served as major of a regiment of Virginia volun- teers, and was also acting governor of Monterey in May and June, 1847. After the disbanding of the army he returned to the practice of law. At the beginning of the civil war he entered the confederate service as a colonel, commanded a brigade at Bull Run, and in the battle of Williamsburg, May 5, Tickets, with Mount Vernon aduission coupoa. for | 1462, was wounded mortally, according to first reports. In June, 1864, General Lee had massed his troops around Richmond and was opposed by Grant. Just then Hunter ap- Deared at the lower end of the valley, and, dashing up the turnpike, passed Strasburg, Woodstock, New Market and Harrison- burg. The federals had never been higher up the valley than Harrisonburg, and Hunter pushed on to Staunton. Then he made for Lexington, and on towards Lynch« vurg. Gen. Lee realized the great danger this advance, successfully carried cut, meant, and determined to send a into the valley to deal with Hunter prevent his return to Washington. The work required a commander with decision, energy and rapidity of movement, aad for it Gen. Early was selected. At that time the general was commanding Ewell’s corps, and with it he was moved te ae, and Hunter retired down the valley. Early won a victory at Monocacy in July, 1864, and then pushed on toward Wasbiag- ton. At one time, it is said, he was so close that the fire of his skirmishers could be heard at the White House. Early con- cluded he was not strong enough to take the city, and on the night of July 12 begai to retreat. Soon after this he made a ra! eer Pennsylvania and burned Chambers- ure. Sheridan was then sent against him, an@ at Opequan, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek Early sustained staggering defeats, while in March, 1865, he was totally routed and bis army dispersed at Waynesboro by Cast In consequence of these disasters Early was relieved by Lee. After the close of the war Gen.Early spent some time in Europe, and on his recarn resumed the practice of law in Richmond. He subsequently took up his residence m New Orleans, alternately with Lynchburg, Va., where, with Gen. Beauregard, he be- came a manager of the Louisiana State Lottery. He was president of the Southern Historical Society, and in 1867 published a pamphlet entitled “A Memoir of the Last Year of the War for Independence in the Confederate States.” Worl comes from the opal mines near Caldwell, Idaho, of the finding of the largest opal in the world.
