16 TAKOMA PARK HALL. THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, MARCH 38, 1894—-TWENTY PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS. TAKOMA PARK. | The substantial growth of Takoma Park fas been for some time one of the features | of suburban development. From being al small collection of houses composing a) rural community it has gone ahead steadily | and has attained a corporate dignity ard) has not only the population, but the fad -/ ties of a town. The latest enterprise of | this progressive community is a building | for a hall. It is to be of brick, from plans | made by J. W. Palmer, architect, of this city. The first story will be, as the loca-! tion in the business section of Takoma | suggests, tted up for use as stores) and the upper story will be used for office | rooms and for a hall. The site of the new | building is where the Hotel Watkins stood | up to the close of the season last fall, and | this rapid restoration, as it might be term- ed. of the ravages of fire is only another | evidence of the enterprise which is found in this community. The new building is/ being erected by a company formed of Ta- koma Park residents mostly, and is there- fore a home concern. The rehearsal of Takoma chorus last evening was one of the best attended In| the history of that organization. While the city is improving the streets that have been opened, there is a pressure for the opening of streets which are now fenced in, having never yet been used as thoroughfares. Corporation Attorney. Brent, as mentioned in The Star, reported to the council at its last meeting that the city had the right to open Pitt street as far south as Jefferson street. The right of way along Royal street to the corporation line is con- ceded by all parties. It was, ‘indeed, dered to be opened over ninety years ago, when, upon the 10th of May, 1802, the fol- lowing report was made to the city council: “The committee appointed to inquire what Streets within the limits of the corporation now shut should be opened are of the opin- jon that the following streets: should be opened, viz.: Royal street, southward as far as Church street; all the streets below Gib- bon, inclusive, should Le opened from Royal iver Potomac, and that Gib- bon and Franklin streets ought to be opened to the westward across Royal strest. Where- upon the said report is concurred in, and it is ordered that the parties concerned have thirty days’ notice in writing for the re- moval of the fences.” At that time Royal street was barricaded at Wilkes street. All the streets mentioned have been opened in accordance with the report of 1802, except Royal street, which is still closed at Frank- lin street, except that the Mt. Vernon rail- way has the right of way along that thor- oughfare as far as Church street, where it turns to the southwest.
