12 THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1894—TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS, | ALEXANDRIA. State Senator Mushbach is by no means disposed to consider that his twenty-four fonstituents who are members of the city eouncil of Alexandria have any nearer re- lation to him as a representative than any other twenty-four xentlemen, as wise and able as they are, in the three counties which he represents. He has recently introduced Into the state senate several measures which the city council has not recommended, and he announces in a recent letter that when- ever a constituent and a respectable citizen asks him to offer a bill which does not in- volve an improper principle he will do so. It is understood that Representative Bend- heim in the house of delegates has made a similar declaration. The funeral of Mr. Wm. G. Simpson took piace here this afternoon from his late home on North Pit street, where he has been long a sufferer from Bright's disease. Mr. Simpson was a native Alexandrian. He learned the trade of a machinist at the Smith & Perkins foundry. He afterward, im conjunction with the late Chas. Perkin- gon, bought out Muirhead's bakery on Fair- fax street, which he conducted for some/ time at that place and on King street be- tween Washington and St. Asaph 2treets. He was long a leading member of the F! draulion Fire Company and was at one time its engineer. He was the brother of the late James H. Simpson of the Washington police force, and in 1855-56 conducted a bakery on D street, near 10th, in Washing- ton. A liberal-hearted, kindly gentlemsn, his memory will linger in the hearts of many friends. ‘The trustees of the Alexandria Infirmary have chosen Drs. Ashby, Jones, Klipsiein and O’Brien attending physicians, and Drs. Brown and Gibson as consulting ,hysicians. Wilson Beverly, a colored man, who re- sides at 1524 treet southeast, and drives an express wagon for a livelihood, was found, on Saturday evening, by Officer Green, lying in front of Frazer's coal yard, where he had fallen from vertigo, and was in danger of perishing from the cold. He was assisted to the station house, where he came to himself, and was able to return to his home. ‘The Rev. Hugh T. Stevenson, pastor of the Anacostia baptist Church, will conduct the Gospel services at the mission, Haine’s Hall, tomorrow evening. ‘There will be a meeting in the cause of temperance at the Congress Heights M. Under the regime of the old council the snow plow was out and had the way clear for pedestrians in time for the train. Mr. M. E. Church is quite sick. -—-——.-—_. WRECK OF THE KEARSARGE. Seen Yesterday Afternoon in the Court of Inquiry. With a show of gold lace and official im- portance the court appointed to inquire into the grounding and the wrecking of the Kearsarge began its work in the navy yard at Brooklyn yesterday. Rear Admiral Bancroft Gherardi, president of the court, sat at the head of the long table. The court of inquiry is to decide whether Com- mander Oscar F. Heyerman, Lieut. Charles . R. Brainard shall be tried by court-martial. The official pa- pers were read for the benefit of-the offi- H. Lyman and Lieut. cers of the Kearsarge. Then Mr. Kelly turned to Mr. Heyerman. “Commander,” he sald, “do you desire to appear before this court voluntari! “I do,” answered the commander. ‘No, sir; I do not.” Mr. Lyman was asked the same questions and made the same answers. Mr. Kelly then asked them whether they had any cause to challenge the officers of the court. They said they had not. ‘The interesting ceremony of swearing in the officers of the court followed. J. W. Crawford and W. J. Woods, the stenographers, were introduced to the court and sworn. This finished the organi- zation of the court, and notice was given to Capt. Miller, who is in command of the re- ceiving ship Vermont, to have the officers and crew of the Kearsarge mustered at 2 p.m. that there might take place what proved to be one of the most impressive ceremonies known to the navy yard. The entire crew and officers were mus- tered on the spar deck of the old ship. On the starboard side the crew were massed closely in long lines. Among them was Admiral Gherardi in fatigue uniform. All of them, officers and crew, bore marks of their experiences. This was shown in their clothing and in their faces, from which the bronze is slowly disappearing. “Are all the survivors mustered who can be assembied?" asked Admiral Gherardi, turning to Commander Heyerma! “Yes; all that can be assembled,” replied the commander. The president of the court directed the judge advocate to read the narrative, as it is called officially, of Commander Heyer- man to those assembled. Mr. Kelly read this report. Then, ad- dressing the crew, Admiral Gherardi said: “Now, lads, I am about to swear you, and not only you, but the officers of the ship as well, and certain questions will be put to you. You have all heard the report of the commanding officer and the indorse- ment of the commander-in-chief of the North Atlantic station. I want one and all of you to bear in mind the solemnity of the oath you are to take, and remember that there will be certain questions put to you which it is your duty, both officers and men, to answer, no matter how painful it may be to any of you. I shall give you a few minutes to think over exactly what you want to say, for, remember, subse- quently to this you have to swear to all you say here. (A solemn pause.) Gentle- men and crew, please raise your right hand.” When all had been sworn the president turned to Commander Heyerman, and these questions and answers followed: Q.—Is the narrative read to the court a true statement of the grounding and wreck of the United States’ late ship the Kear- A.—It 1s, sir. Q.—Have you any complaint to make against any of the surviving officers and crew of said ship on that occasion? A.—None whatever, Admiral Gherardi then addressed the offi- cers and crew: “Have you anything to ob- ject to in the narrative just read to the arge of any officer or men with regard to the loss of the United States late ship, the Kear- court or anything to lay to the c sarge ‘There was no movement among the crew nor among the officers. Admiral Gherardi turned to the former and said: “Now I want to impress upon you that this is not a question of spite. It is not a question of dislike or,whether you feel that you have a dislike against some irdividual, but it is a question of duty— simple, plain, straightforward duty. There- fore any of you who have a complaint to make will step forward and make that complaint to the judge advocate, who will take it down in writing.” Not one of the men moved. The admiral turned to the officers. They had nothing to say. When he spoke to some of them individ- ually they shook their heads. This ended the proceedings of the day. The men were dismissed, and the ecurt adjourned until today. MSs ee : Y FARMERS POISONED. They Ate Beef That Had Been Boiled in a Copper Kettle.
