The first break from the democratic sen- ate came last night at Trenton, N. J., when Senator Miller of Cape May made a speech denouncing the dea@lock and declaring his intention to have nothing more to do with the senate. The senate had just been callec to order and Senator Adrain was in the chair. Seven were present. Senator Miller arose to a question of privilege, saying that in what he had to say in connection with what had happened in the past few days he did not care to indulge in personalities. Regarding the publications concerning lim in New York papers, he wished to jenter a denial and denounce them as con- temptible lies from beginning to end. He said the object of the newspapers in the last two or three days has been to try to mold popular sentiment in favor of the democratic party, but the result has been just the opposite. Senator Miller went on to say that he cratic organization had but one motive and one incentive, and that was not to protect race track legislation. He w: willing to assert that this democratic senate was Kept up for the purpose of aiding the race track people. The people of New Jersey had come to that conclusion, and so had he, | most positively. He did not care to be a party to this or- ganization any longer. He was unwilling to j be connected with it, knowing it was un- popular with his constituents and with | | nearly all the citizens of the state, so long | 4s it was controlled in the interest of the race track men. He felt certain that that was the controlling power; tiferefore,, after due deliberation, he had positively con- cluded that he would not be a party to any, such organization. chamber he would vote to seat their sen- ators. His own colleagues had acknowl- | edged to him that that would be only right. He was no lawyer; knew nothing about the law. and wanted to know nothing about it, | and, wthout intending any disrespect to the court, his own opinion was that the quo warranto proceedings were only a farce. He did not propose to go into the re- publican senate, nor make himself any more conspicuous than was necessary, but before he would see the republicans sine die he would invite them into this chamber and assure them of his support. The New York paper and its Camden ally might brand him as a traitor and put his picture in every day, but he would nevertheless act in accordance with the dictates of his conscience and in the in- terests of the people. Mr. Miller was severely denounced by Senator Hinchliffe, who told him that he deserved many of the things that had been said about him, and that his conscience troubled him and caused him to do what he had done. He said some of the rest of them might feel the same way, but they did not want to parade their troubles be- fore the public. The opinion prevails that the action of Senator Miller practically means the end of the deadlock: that two democratic sena- tors to vote with the republicans for the seating of members made the case of the deadlock almost a hopeless one and the taking of further testimony in the quo warranto proceedings merely a matter of form. eee THE counts. MUST HAVE HIM AS A SAVIOUR He Can Deliver Man or Woman From All Sin, AN EBLOQUENT APPEAL af Through slush and slop the unwearying People poured last night in the usual thou- sands to Convention Hall, and by 7 o'clock the great room was well filled once more, though there was the novel spectacle of isos to spare. The choir was tardy in ar- riving, but the thousand on hand at the seventh hour seemed to give forth about Ss much volume of song as the full chorus as they sang hymn after hymn to keep the religious atmosphere up to the proper pitch while the hour for opening the regular ser- vices was epproaching. Preliminary Exercises. Mr. Sankey and Miss Carrie Ayer opened the evening by singing “Speed Away” as a duet, which was followed by a quartet, com- posed of Mr. Sankey, Miss Ayer, Prof. Fos- ter and Mr. Geo. W. Havell, who sang No. 66, “Let the Savior In.” Then the congre- gation rose and with the choir sang the 217th hymn, “How Firm the Foundation.” Congressman Morse offered the first pray- erand Mr. Sankey sang “There is a Green Hill Far Aw No. 185, in the chorus of Which Prof. Foster joined. Rev. Dr. Me- Kim prayed and the choir sang the 807th hymn. Mr. Moody read from the 8th Psalm, be- ginning “How amiable are Thy tabernacles, } i aad Mrs. C. B. Rheem and Prof. Foster sang the 34th hymmnas «duct “Only a Beam of Sunshine,” after which Mr. Moody gave notice that the talk this afterncon would be on the “Overcoming ae ” He — eres pup to the difference ween means to leave us in Egypt, but that He has sent some one to deliver us as well as to save us from bondage. Can Deliver From AN Sin. “There isn't a man or a woman here to- night who is suffering from any sin—I don’t care what it is—from which Christ can’t deliver them. There isn’t anything that stops Him. He is even a match for devils. He can cast out the rum devil among others. I can see some of you here tonight with the marks of that fiend on |Your face. You can’t hide that devil. It jis bound to make its appearance on the surface and it is one of the worst devils of all the legion of heil, and one of *he | hardest to conquer. But Christ can stamp | the life out of it, and He can kill ram devils by the score here tonight if you only want Him to do it. He's got just as much pow- er tonight as He ever had, and it don’t take any more power to save sinners and to kill | devils tonight than it did centuries ago. He Never Lost a Cane. “Christ never lost a case that He under- took to cure. That's a wonderful record, I tell you. Suppose a physician should hang out a shingle here in Washington and ad- vertise in the newspapers so that every one would believe him that he had never lost a patient. Don’t you suppose he would do a rushing business? Don't you suppose Christ can do better than that?” |. Mr. Moody told of the woman mentioned in the Gospel of St. Mark who had been sick for twelve years, wasting away = the care of successive doctors, and heard of Jesus of Nazareth, who was on gy the country aumee ane She pressed through the crowd, ell | her way to reach the wonderful until she came near Him, Hl 383 7 ip H ee ! wd and the touch of faith. here,” i li i 4 ight who will not get the They will go away wondering this meeting means, anyway. They will to the roof and listen to the music and feel bored and go home to say that they have had a dreadfully stupid time. have missed that touch of faith.” As to Doctrines and Creeds. Then he went on to speak of doctrines and creeds in a way that made the ears of Some of the ministers on the platform tin- gle. “I meet many people,” he said, “who are quite willing to go to Christ if they oniy know which way to take. “There are £0 many creeds, and ways, and doctrines,” they say, and they despair at the outset. They hear the Baptists calling to them | that theirs is the only true path t3 heaven, | while the Presbyterians contend that theirs j is the right way, and the Methodists insist that they have the only straight road. Then the Episcopalians and the Catholics and the Lutherans and all the others cry out that those who don’t go their way are lost. “Don’t listen to them! Don't mind them! Look to that one grand figure that shines above them all—look Christ as He caiis out: ‘1 am the way! If you want light and peace don’t look to preachers, or dea- cons, or ministers, or evangelists, but lool to Christ alone. The Tree Copy. “I remember when I was a little boy at school my teacher set me a copy for a writing lesson. I copied it right well and then started on the next line to copy from that. Then I made another line from the last one I Lad finished, until the page was finished and I saw to my surprise that my last line was very bad, while my first one had been very good. I could not under- stand it until the teacher came around and Pointed out to me the astonishing truth that I hadn't kept my eye on the eopy. “Why don't you keep your eye on the true copy? You are all looking to the little Tush lights, these tallow dips, and you are apt to miss your way in the vast wilderness a & oe 3 i I i After Mr. Moody had prayed that the re- maining eight days might be marked by many conversions the congregation and choir sang number 42, while the workers went down among the people and began the conversational part of the meeting.
