Better amateur operatic per- formances have been given here than im |any other city. From the first amateur | opera, which was given in the building that | Stood on the site of Harris’ Bijou Theater, in 1870, down to the juvenile “Pinafore” given this afternoon at the New National Theater, all the amateur performances die Randall, as Nancy; Lionel, Witherow; Plunkett, Mr. 8. One of the moss ambitious amateur attempts was the Presentation of “Faust,” with Miss Eva | Mills as Marguerite, in which she surprised and gratified her friends by her excellent Singing. It may be remarked that Miss Mills was the original Josephine in “Pina- fore” in this country when it was at the Standard Theater in New that she played the character wil d #B | Unguished success for a whole year. It may be further stated that “Pinafore” was produced in this city by amateurs before it had Its professional representation in New York. The cast was: Mrs. Camp, as Jose- phine; Mrs. H. C. Sherman, Butt ; Mr. John ©. Pugh, Ralph Rackstraw; . We H. Daniel, Capt. Corcoran; Mr. E. B. Hay, | Sir Joseph Porter, and Mr. Howard Ny- | man, Dick Deadeye. The performance this afternoon has de veloped one young Washingtonian in an excellent degree, and that is Mr. Harry Wheaton Howard, who will wield the H | and be responsible for the musical part of | the work. Mr. Howard is a young man, and organist, but he has proved himself « composer of ability. His development as a | conductor is the natural result of his thor- day, April 4. Mr. Camp will remembered as the secretary of the Washington Operatic Association, and bring to his new position in the Choral Society the necessary experience and judgment. Mr. Camp's succ’ “sor as rian is Mr. P. C. J. Treano:, than whom sical circles. Mr. Treanor is connected with the Capital Glee Club, and ts manager of the Philharmonic Club as well. The Mount Vernon Choral Society, with Mr. G. W. Lawrence as musical director, is now enjoying a well-earned reputation as one of the foremost musical organizations in the city, Like others of its kind, it had many reverses during its earlier which were often discouraging, but the untiring energy of its director and |it-has gained the prominence it deserves. The date of its organization was January 12, INK, with a membership of only twenty voices, and in June last it gave its first concert, which was an artistic success, Dur- ing the summer months the society dis- banded, but was reorganized September 1 with an increased membership, and was conspicuous for its good work as a part of he Sreat chorus Watch took part in the Capitol centennial celebration, furnishing for that occasion over a hundred voices. Its second concert was given November 23 last, and, like the first, was highly credit- able. The audience will be a large and intelligent one, and in it Dalti- more and Philadelphia will be represented. Reports come from those who have been fcrtunate enough to attend the rehearsals that ihe music is not only bright catchy, but soulful, particularly some of Ei | the numbers in the second act. Three one-act plays will be pro- duced each evening, and the three that most favorably impress the audiences of the first two evenings wil! be billed for the third evening. All of the plays have not been definitely decided upon as yet, but it is thought that in a few days the names and the casts of characters will be ready for publication. A number of the cadets of companies E and I have banded themselves together and organized an independent military com- pany, which wiil be oificered by the follow- ing: Captain, John L. An effort will be made jto secure a hall on K street, where the business meetings and drils will he heid The boys are now waiting for some benev- olent gentlemen to go bond for them in order that they may be enabled to secure rifles from the government. Tt is Y probable that by the end of this week steps wili have been taken to organ- ize a base batl league among the various high schools. A debating society has been organized at the Busit css High School under the direc- tion of Mr. Gery. An organization was ef- fected for the purpose of discussing topics of both locai and national interest. A great deal of dissatisfaction has been expressed at the Business recently in con- nection with the setting up exercises which the boys are obilged tu make use of every drill day. The subject of rusts has been a special study of Prof. Carleton.
