Several of the new sections agreed upon in the board of common council hav- ing been non-concurred in by the aldermen, the charter ordinance will go back to the common council at its next meeting, and it is mow understood that once in that board again it i never come out alive. One of the first improvements toward a renewal of manufactories here this year is made at the plant of the ice manufacturing company mear Cameron street dock. Columbus W. Windson, a highly esteemed young farmer, living near Urbana, this county, died suddenly and unexpectedly cn Saturday night, aged twenty-seven years. Judge Wiliam Calkins, ex-Congressman from Indiana, @jed yesterday at Tacoma, Wash., of Bright's Gigease, aged fifty-two years. Judge Calkins had resided at Tacoma nearly five years, going t» Tacoma in 188) from Indiana. He had represented the La- porte, Ind., district in Congress and was a prominent figure at the Capitol. He retired from Congress in 1884 to become the repub- lican candidate for governor of Indiana. He was defeated, his democratic’ competitor be- ing Isaac P. Gray, present minister to Mex- ico. He then practiced law in Indianapolis until the election of Mr. Harrison to the Presidency, when he was appointed to a federal office.
