According to a cable dispatch from Rio Janeiro, Admiral Benham caused consid- by es- er to her wharf in the harbor. Compiaints had been made that the insursents had fired at American vessels proceeding to their wharves. Admiral Benham had rem- enstrated, but Admiral da Gama had re- plied that the vessels should keep out of | the way. Admiral Benham thereupon de- | termined to take summary action. Early yesterday morning the greatest ac- tivity prevailed on board the fleet. Shortly after daybreak the decks of the flagship New York, of the Newark, San Francisco, Detroit, and other United States war ves- sels were cleared for action and their an- chors were raised. Admiral Benham then sent word to the captains of the vessels that had been an- noyed that he was prepared to keep his promises to them, and that as soon as they were ready to proceed he would escort them and |to the wharves. The news that something important was taking place eboard the American war- chips rapidly spread both on shore and aboard the ships of all the foreign fleets represented at Rio. The Detroit took the leading part in the procession. The fleet as it approached near- er to Rio, came quite close to the shore, causing intense excitement among both the soldiers and civillans on land and the sailors on board the various vessels.
