Bartlett of the sixth battalion, haw ing accepted the challenge of Maj. Thomp- son of the engineer corps to a team match between the two commands, preparations are in active progress for the event, which Promises to be one of the most interesting shoots of the season. In his letter of ac- ceptance Maj. Bartlett suggested that it would have been better, from a military standpoint, to have each organization rep- resented by a team of ten enlisted men, but he did not insist upon the amendment. Maj. Thompson replied in the following letter: “I have the pleasure to acknowledze your acceptance of my challenge of December 22, 1893, and the date of the match will be announced as soon as possible, as I am informed by the inspector general of rifle practice. My desire in making the entry to be ‘without regard to rank’ is that one or the other of the competing veams—and thus presumably made up of the very best shots in such organization—may put up @ score that may serve as a standarl and show what may be accomplished in galiery practice. If the scores do not surpass any before made the real object of my chal- lenge will go for nothing. To accomplish this, as far as possible, I desire that regu- lar gallery ammunition be used, but ‘care- fully prepared,’ viz: For example, that true bullets and clean, true shells be used, &c. Thanking you for your prompt acceptance and believing that you will use your best endeavors, as I will myself, to muke it an event o¢ interest and importance to th? general advance of rifle practice in the 0 ey Toepecttall ully, ser GILBERT THOMPSON, Maj. Com. Eng. Corps, D. C. a” In accordance with this agreement, the inspector general of rifle practice has an- nounced that the match will take place om the evening of January 2%, the night set apart for the meeting of inspectors of rifie practice. This meeting will take place in the gallery at the conclusion of the match, which will not take up much time. Both Lieuts. G. B. Young and W. P. Vale, in- spectors of the engineers und the sixth, re- spectively, are hard at work getting their men into shape. They are working witb about twenty men each, and from. these they will select the teams of ten. An Engineer Entertainmen*. The entertainment season is in full blast, and each week brings out two or three en- Joyable evenings arranged by the members of the guard. Tickets are now out for a musical entertainment and dance to be siven by the engineer corps on Thursday evening next at National Rifles’ Hall. The Proceeds are to be devoted to the furnish- irg of the battalion headquarters. A fine Program has been arranged, with numbers from the Columbia Musical Club, Professor Cloward, Professor Leo Wheat, the Christo- Leo Steltfel, Mr FG. Chapman, panto- mimist; Mr. John Miller, comedian; Profs sor Schultz, ccrnetist, and Mr. Nelson Wood, ventriloquist. Official Gallery Practice. Rifle practice in the gallery during nex ‘week will take place in accordance with € following schedule: Monday—Co. A, Third Battalion. Tuesday—Co. A, Fourth Battalion. Wednesday—Co. B, Sixth Battalion ‘Thursday—Co, A, Second Battalion. Friday—Engineer Corps. Saturday—First Separate Co. (Troop A.) Notes. ‘The annual full dress reception of the Washi Light Infantry Corps will take place on next Wednesday evening, January 10, from 9 to 2 o'clock. This affair has be- come one of the events of Washington’ social season, and the military part of Population look forward to it with pleasure. As usual the members of all the organizations will appear in uniform, and @ brilliant spectacle will be presented. Cc. J. Goode has been elected to fill the vacancy in company B, fourth battalion, caused by the resignation of First Lieut. Kelly. A committee composed of Corporais J. C. Sargent and Greer, and Privates Col- clazer, Amity and Martin was appointed to wait upon the newly elected officer and notify him of his elevation. Baltimore will probably soon have a cav- alry company. Active steps have been tak- en lately, and on the other evening a meet- ing was held ai the Mt. Vernon Hotel in that city for the purposes'of organization. Captain S. T. Hamilton {of the Unii States cavalry, Captain Ikidor Becker the Maryland National Guard, and Col. E. recommended to obtain a commission from the legisia- ture, and a committee was appointed for this purpose. —_—_ SYMPATHY FOR THE POOR. Well-to-Do People Thinking of the Destitute. ‘The example set by ex-Speaker Reed, in declining an invitation to a banquet on the ground that the money expended thereon could be better spent in helping the poor, is likely to have several followers here, says a New York special to the Baltimore Amer- ican. The regular stock after-dinner speak- ers in New York are reluctant to appear at expensive dinners while the poor are in need of the necessities of actual existence. The dinner-giving season has just about cpened here, and already it is announced that, be- cause of the hard times, many of the orate banquets, which have been the regular winter season, will not place. The clubs and social bodies note. At the charity ball the other night many of the familiar from the boxes. Their o usual sum into the treasury but they did not think it In good form to attend while thousands are out So far as the giving of Delmonico quets goes, there will be a notable down of expenses on the part of the ties impelled by tradition to give banquets every year. One can see at Delmonico’s any evening new evidences of economy practiced by even the habitues of that place. Where formerly there were numerous groups of four and five people drinking at the tables or eating in the restaurant, are now to be seen tables occupied single person. The idea seems to spend money less ‘ostentatiously than merly, lest the charge be brought that Practice of extravagance at this time Is display of intolerable vulgarity and ness. An inquiry among the proprietors the fashionable dining halls shows that season will be a tame one so far as banquets go. The collections made by the various trict committees of Tammany Hall for poor have not yet been completed, but certain that a large sum of money ts raised in this way. Take for example Seneca Club, which is a Tammany Hall trict club. The members of that club night subscribed more than $1,000 for poor, and only one-fourth of the membership was in attendance upon the meeting. The officeholders and those who hope to be willingly subscribe through their district leaders, because they know that those in ihaattt cet ghFe given. While nearly all of the money thus raised by Tammany Hall for the help of the poor has been drawn from the city treasury, the donation helps to make Tammany solid in the districts where poverty is the rule, From Harper's Bazar. 1 do not understand the tale, ‘ Though I don't doubt it's choice, | But I do love to sit and bear .
