12 s THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1893-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS. ROCKVILLE. ‘The November term of the circuit court for this county closed today, after a session of about four weeks, during which a large | amount of business was transacted. Dur- ing the last week of the term quite a large number of cases for violation of the local option law were tried. In the. case of the State vs. John Dorsey, convicted of break- ing into the storehouse of Isaiah Coar at Ednor, motion for a new trial has been filed. Mr. John T. Fletchall, an aged and prom- Inent citizen of the county, died on Tues- day at his home in Pooiesville district, after & very brief illness, in the seventieth year of his age. During many years Mr. Fletchall Was a prominent democratic politician and represented this county in the house of delegates for one session. He also for some years occupied the position of superinten- dent on the Chesapeake and Ohio canal. Was a practical farmer and took much inter- est in agricultural affairs. f He | the first and second paragraphs under the A Question. To the Editor of The Evening Star: The Star of yesterday quotes these words of Dr. Hamlin’s Sunday sermon: “The movement (to appropriate public money for Catholic schools) has its seat and force dis- tinetively in the hierarch: Does he mean the whole hierarchy are in favor of this movement? If so, what proof has he for such an assertion? I am quite sure Cardinal Gibbons is not in favor of this movement, for I read in the account of his celebration in Baltimore over a month ago that he had said before a large gathering of representative Catholics: “I would not wish to see a closer union of church and state than we have at present.” br. Hamlin quotes Archbishop Satolli’s words in the Thanksgiving address. Does it follow from these words that the arch- bishop is in favor of this movement to ap- propriate public funds for Catholic schools? ‘To me these words simply mean that Arch- bishop Satolli has more faith in the-moral influence of the Catholic Church as a means of education than Dr. Hamlin seems to have in the moral Influence of the Presbyterian Church as a means of education. (Compare heading “‘Sectarian Schools Inferior.”) Perhaps the doctor is better acquainted with the other members of the hierarchy Mr. Henry Williams, a well-known citizen | than I am, but whatever he may know con- of the county, died on Monday at his rest- dence near Germantown, aged seventy-four cerning the opinions of the other members of the aierarchy, as a Catholic living in the District, I feel confident I can agree en- years. Mr, Washington W. White, formerly sher- if of this county, has been appointed gov- ernment storekeeper at near Clarksburg. The appointment was made by Internal Revenue Collector Van- diver after considering the claims of a large number of applicants, both from this and other counties.
