A certain plano firm in this city in a recest article to “The Musical Times,” bitterly complained that we (using our name, and cne of cur ““Star’* advertisements as an illustration) were seliing Pianos and Organs entirely TOO CHEAP, and upon cntirely TOO LIB- ERAL TERMS. This dealer said among other things: ‘We do not ask the pub- lication of the above advertisement in ' the belief that it will change Mr. ” Swith’s business tactics. Our sim is to show who is to blame for this ruip- ous (2) cutting.....How can we sell our “square” planos at $5 per month when our neighbor (Mr. Smith) will sell a silver-tongued $-pedal Upright on the same terms?....Is it not time for" " marufacturers und dealers to combine und say: Halt; enough?” ‘Think of it, re fiec-thinking Amer can people! ‘Think of the Plano trade combining to force us to INCREASE our prices. Indeed! Our position us “leaders” of low prices need no argument. Our steadily growing business is conclusive evidence that the ‘public is with us—and appre- ciate low prices. Our business was never so large, nor so profitable—even in the face of the “lowered” prices—as it is today. Yet we did not have to fight our own battle, for that admirable and greatly respected musical journal, “The Muste Trades,"’ snatched up the gauntlet " thrown down by our local competitor and editorially champions our, and “your” cause, of “low prices in the follow- ing unmistakable language: “Messrs. —_— -~—— of Washington, D. C., complain that Mr. F, G. Smith Manufacturer of Bradbury Pianos, 1s offering Pianos ‘too cheap’ and upow " ” too Mberal terms. With regard to this question I would say that, a man has A perfect right to do business as he pleases without regard to his com- petitors, so long as he honorably fulfills his cogagements od Mr. F. G. Smith is a wealthy man....It is only houses of old standing who insist on doing business as their fathers and grand- futbers did before them, and expect in these times of Intense competition to make as much profit on each transac- tion as thelr progenitors did twenty or thirty years agu....As humanity Progresses it will prcduce wealth more cheaply, and distribute it more cheaply. It will learn to make more pianos aud better pianos each year for less money, and will sell them for less money. Yet you ask ‘if prices and profits are to come down this way, how can the manufacturer or dealer lve?'....1 answer ‘by the enormously increased volume of bis business.’ The man who aids in the cheaper production and distribution of wealth is a benefactor to his race....The man who, by his superior manufacturing and business methods, puts an honest, well-made plavo witllla the purchasing power of the ordinary wage-earner has rendered ® greater service to humarity than mary a laurel-crowred general.’ NOW ABOUT OURSELVES. We Do Not Wish “To Pose’’ as Benefactors —but we do wish to go on record as Soying that we shall always strive to sell lower, lower and lower—as low as ‘We possibly can, regardless of the prices and terms quoted by competitors. We have a higher motive than that of mere money making. We are Piano manu- facturers. We have branch stores in every city of any note. Minister Mendonca, the Brazilian mintster, has been informed by his government of the arrival of the Nictheroy on the coast of Brazil. She reached there Tuesday, and since then has been under the contro! of the Brazilian navy department.
