16 cS THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1893—TWENTY PAGES. AMONG THE CHURCHES. | Thanksgiving is coming, with its delights to old and young, its blessings to the poor and its good cheer for all. The day has | been and will be observed in the churches and elsewhere, not merely as a time for giving thanks, but as a time for giving others something to be thankful for. Thanksgiving services are usually held in the churches in the morning or evening, or sometimes both, for the purpose of publicly giving thanks, but the attendance is not generally large. Not that the people have nothing to be thankful for, but because Thanksgiving is peculiarly a day to be celebrated at home, and a time for the re- union of relatives and friends. It is more apt to suggest turkey, pumpkin pies and foot ball to the average mind than church. In country places, where the social life 4s more closely linked with the church than im the city, this is not so often the case. ‘There are, however, a goodly number of persons who, either from duty or pleasure, * make it a regular custom to attend a Thanksgiving service, and for this reason it has become a rule here for several churches of one denomination, or quite as frequently of all denominations in the same locality, to hold a general service in some one church or other. This simplifies mat- ters for people and pastors alike, for the pastors especially, who don’t enjoy work- ing on Thanksgiving any more than other people. * But if the church service is sometimes neglected, there is something vastly more important which is never neglected. This | ‘ is the case of the poor. All unite for their benefit. and even the meanest of people find it impossible to be niggardly under the influence of Thanksgiving time. The Sun- day schools are particularly active in this way, distributing food, fuel, clothing and money to the needy. A most successful = has been tried in some Sunday schools - for this work. A committee is formed awhile beforehand to look up families which are worthy and in actual need of help, and then a family is assigned to each class in the school as their particular charge. This family the teacher probably Visits, ascertains their wants more accu- rately, and interests the class in their be- half. A great deal has been accomplished in this way by giving each scholar a per- sonal interest in the work. The Central | Union Mission and the Associated Charities have always been active in feeding hungry mouths on Thanksgiving, and the Christ- mas clubs have proved a blessing to the children of the poor in Washington Prepa- rations have already been actively com- . menced, and as the present winter has already begun to pinch many here and elsewhere, there will be need of a special effort this year. It is hoped that the work will be unusually successful, at least far enough so that no one in the city will go to bed hungry Thanksgiving night. Last Sunday was “Luther Sunday,” the four Hundred and tenth anniversary ‘of his birth, and was celebrated at the Memorial Lutheran Church by a special collection and a sermon by the pastcr, Rev. J. Butler, on “The Papacy Then and Now. Last Sunday was ypung men’s day here and elsewhere. Some time ago the general ecmmittee of the Young Men's Christian Association sent out a circular to all the churehes from their New York headquar- ters requesting the pastors to set aside that day for young men, ard to conduct special services and p-each special sermons for them on that occasion. The churehes and their ministers responded heartily, and it is estimated that the day was observed fit- tingly in over four thousand churches throughout the world. Heze in this city much interpgst was manifested, the young men, and especially our Young Men's Chris- tian Association. being the keynote of many a sermon and the central thought of mest of the services of the day. Among those who devoted last Sunday very par- ticularly to the interest of young men were Rev. Hugh Johnston of the Metropolitan M. E. Church, who spoke on “The Young Man in the City;’ Dr. Sunderland, First Presbyterian Church, who took “Young Men” as his topic; Rev. J. J. Muir of the E Street Baptist Chu-ch, speaking on “Th Irony of Youth;” Dr. E. S. Todd, Hamlin M. E. Church, taking the subject “Paul's| Counsel to Young Men;” Dr. George Elliott of the Dumbarton Avenue M. E. Church, who preached a sermon on “Young Men and the Church,” and in the evening on “The Young Man Himself; as well as Dr. McKim of the Epiphany P. E. Church, Dr. butler of the Memorial Lutheran Church, Dr. I. W. Canter, Mount Vernon M. E. Church South; Rev. C. L. Pate, Twelfth Street M. E. Church; Dr. Brown, Foundzy M. E. Church; Dr. Hartsock, Ryland M. E. Church; Dr. Hamlin, Covenant Presbyte-/| rian Church, and a numbe: of others. Following these services on Sunday came the week of prayer at the Young Men's} Christian Association, which is held an-| nually at about this time. During the en-| tire week the night work in the gymnasium | has been suspended and a service has been held at noon and at night each day. All the services have been conducted by the Rev. Frank Goodchild of Philadelphia, Pastor of the Spruce Street Baptist Church and president of the Baptist Association of | that city. He is a tireless worker and one | who knows how to talk to and for young| men, as well as to do for them. His own church congregation is composed largely of young men, and during his entire stay here he has neve> repeated the same thought in successive services. He was here a yea> 2go in the same capacity, and besides his old friedds has attracted many new cnes, so that the rooms of the Young Men’s Chris- tian Association have been well filled| throughout the whole week. The fifteenth Episcopal Church conzress, which has been taking place in Chickering | Hall, New York, during this week, has had considerable interest for the Episcopal | clergy of Washington, and a number of | them have been in attendance there part, if not all, of the session. Among the | speakers in the discussion of the various | topics befere the gathering we-e Dr. Elliott | of the Ascension P. E. Church and Dr. McKim of the Epiphany P. E. Church in this city. Dr. McKim took part in the dis- cussion “What shail be done with the sa- loon.” and Dr. Elliott read a paper on “What is invoived in the doctrine of the sufficiency of the Bible.” The congress is Not composed me-ely of clergymen, but is a free parliament in which laymen as well as the clergy take part, and is presided over by the bishop in whose diocese it is heid. During October committees were appoint- ed by the presbytery to hold services in various Presbyterian churches here in the city for the purpose of uniting the work ond strengthening the general church feel- ing among the members. Next week, in ursuance of this course, Dr. Hamlin, ev. Mr. Bradford and Elder F. L. Moore will hold special services on the evenings of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the} Fourth Presbyterian Church, .of which Dr. Kelly is the pastor. Last week at the North Presbyterian Church, on N_ street between 9th and 10th streets, Dr. Keily and Dr. Easton-held similar services two nights in the week, and at the Church of the Covenant Rev. F. J. Grimke, Rev. B. F. Bittinger and Rev. M Baily conducted se-vices in accordance with the plan of the Bresbytery. Other services of a like char- acter have taken place and are to take Place in other churches later on, the idea being to exert the influence of the pzesby- tery in bringing the churches closer together fm their work and relations, and of strengthening the united work in the Pres- byterian churches of Washington. ‘With the Methodists of the city there are two plans for accomplishing something of the same kind as that undertaken by the Presbyterians, although the methods are different. One is the general revival meet- ing of all the Methodist churches of the ‘eto begin at the Foundry Church next Morday night, and to be held successively for different periods in all parts of the city. The idea was originated by Dr. Brown of Foundry, and at the preliminary mass meeting held in his church last Friday night the great need of such work was em- phaSized, and the plan suggested was warmly approved and received the promise of hearty support from all sides. The pas- tors who will take part next week are Dr. Widerman, McKendree M. E. Church, on Monday night; Dr. Naylor, the presiding elder, Tuesday night; Dr. Elliott, Dumbar- ten Avenue M. E. Church, Wednesday night; Dr. Todd, Hamline M. E. Church, Thursday night. and Rev. M. F. B. Rice, Fourth Street M. E. Church. Friday night. A general announcement will be made to- morrow in the churches, as has been done in some of them already, in regard to the meetings, and a large attendance is ex- pected. The other project, a novel one, and a dif- ficult one to all appearances, is brought for- ward by the presiding elder, Dr. Henry R. Naylor. There is a debt of nearly $70,000 | in the aggregate on the Methodist churches | | } | of this city, and Dr. Naylor is working to get the churches to pool this debt. Such | action would unquestionably be of great benefit to the denomination here, and it is thought that if every Methodist in Wash- ington was pledged to a certain amount against the pay of the general debt | two or three years the entire amount might be wiped out, and a fund start- | 2 extension. In the or- the churches ure sup- |tor and his wife of this ported mostly by a few people, and a great bulk of the members do next to nothing in @ practical and financial support of their church. For the number of Methédists in Washington their churches and facilities are inadequate, and neither what they should or could be in a place so largely represented by that denomination. Much interest is being taken in this plan, by which every one would contribute some- thing, no matter how little, to raise the preseat debt, and start a system of church extension and improvement by the erection of needed churches and the enlargement of Present structures. ‘The Kindergarten Club held their regular meeting at the Union Methodist Church recently, and an entertaining program was rendered. The meeting was addressed by Civil Service Commissioner Lyman, and Rev. W. C. Alexander also took part. The next meeting will take place at the All — ——— Church. ie musical people of Gurley Memorial Presbyterian Church are engaged in the preparation of thé cantata of “Queen Esther.” Some of the best soloists of the city have been engaged, costumes secured and a chorus’ of fifty children and young ladies is being trained. The cantata will be given on the night of December 6 at Metzerott Music Hall. Prof. J. L. Ewell, dean of the theological department of Howard University, has fin- ished his course of three lectures on for- eign lands at the First Baptist Church, and it is hoped that he will shortly appear be- fore the Home Missionary Society of the First Congregational Church, W. E. Church, a church building soon. ey has been subscribed for a new church building in the “East Washington Park.” near Benning, on the Baltimore and Potomac railroad. This mis- sion will be placed in the fostering care of the Metropolitan M. E. Church. The McKendree M. E. Church. Dr. Wider- man, will unite with the Mount Vernon M. E. Church South, of which Rev. I. W. Can- ter is pastor, for their Thanksgiving ser- vice. ‘Thanksgiving services will be marked at the Metropolitan M. E. Church. The church le evening a grand the morning and in th organ concert will be given by the brilliant New York musician, Prof. William C. Carl, with solo singers.
