To the Editor of The Evening Star: In your Saturday's issue Mr. F. P. Smith, after prating a good deal about what he terms “the noble life of the law” (refer- ring to the Roanoke riot), says “that it— the law—weuld have been cheaply purchas- €d though every man (meaning those who composed the mob) who had raised a hand against the negro had fallen.” ‘Tisn’t that we care for Mr. F. P. Smith's estimate of men or his strike at the southern people, since the hand that he raised is the same that has carried the bloody shirt for thirty years and has found itself arrayed at all | times against a chivalrous people, who | tectic Who are beloved to be the | Dave nearest to their heart the protection ones who recently were enzaged in stealing horses in this section, our farmers are some- what relieved of apprehension on account of their stock, but the recent vecurrences will cause them to still keep a sharp look- out for others who may be in the business. It ts much regretted here that the thi will be tried In Pennsylvania for cr committed there, and that our people will not haye the pleasure of interviewin, If they were brought to the county it seems more than likely that the public expense of @ trial would be small. In the orphan’s court today the Thomas W. Clagett, decease probate and record. The w Murphy, deceased, was fil to probate and record. tration on the personal estate of Elisha J. Hall, deceased, were grante Nesbitt and Catharine Waters and F: executors of Wm. Leonidas Ricketts, admini: Ricketts, deceased, filed mv estates of their 1 Sarah F. Maxwetl, of James S . Maxwell, deceased, was ordered to distribute the assets in her hands amonx the creditors of said deceased, according to the audit ratified and con‘irmed by the of their women and the sanctity of homes! No; we only care for that much of Mr. F. P. Smith's fling as will give us an oppor- nity to refer to what he pathetically calls he nobie life of the law.” It is of late patent to every man who reads and remem- bers, to every woman who has a wrong to right, to every plaintiff who has had a trial and experiences, that appealing to the law would be a people's last resort. It is also patent to an observer that more innocent people suffer and more criminals escape through technicalities and blundering of the law than can be chargeable to any or- ganized mob of good citizens! Prating about the nobility of many of our present laws—let us clte a case or two: Miss Pol- lard, who has just filed suit in your city against what she characterizes as her se- ducer, has been told that her case can't possibly come up in the courts sooner than two years. Would a noble life of a Jaw—think you—allow a poor woman who may have been deeply wronged to live between life and death for two such long years? Or should the defendant, if accused unrighteously, be forced to stand the shame and live under such a cloud for so long a time without a chance to vindicate his char- acter? Would a noble life of the law look complacently on while, by its decrees, erimi- nals are held chain-bound for months and in murderous cells, until the country, years, fatiing to learn whether they are guilty or no, have forgotten the circumstances, and @ folly instead of a lesson is left for a moral? Would a noble life of the law per- mit disappointed heirs to frustrate the earnest designs of many of our hallowed dead, or give opportunities to scheming rascals that they may snatch many a Iife saving from the rightful owner! No! And we say emphatically that the noble life of the law of today exists only in ghost form, and to every man or woman of moderate means who has a grievance, of whatever nature, we still further say, appeal to the law only as the dernier resort. As the courts are now governed, the poor have not the means of going to law (the privilege being too costly), and hence they have to live on and suffer and let their difficulties settle in forgetfulness. The lynching in the south, when fully explained to the people of the north, will be set down as a neces- sary evil, made so by the rather ignoble life of the law, and it is a matter of no con- sequence to the people of Roanoke whether a flaunting traducer adjudges them saints or anarchists. Let the laws of the land be so plainly written that they shall mean that retributive justice shall follow at once, and let them be so simple and the courts so ar- ranged that the poor with a $5 grievance can have its case pleaded for a mere nomi- nal fee, and when done lynching will not only disappear from the day's records, but there will be a universal law-abiding and lberty-loving people, and fewer women ravishers and highwaymen to disturb the peace of the country. The fault, we think, is in an ineffective law. J.S.N. — The Proposed Statue of Baird. You make the statement in your Issue of Saturday that “Washington is proud of and grateful for its military statues,” and express the wish “that there could be some way provided for securing as adornments for some of the spaces of the city statues of great civil leaders to round out the his- | tory told by the city’s memorials.” in furtherance of that wish you can establish a claim to the prospective gratitude of the y by urging the passage of a bill offered | in Congress several years since providing for the erection of a statue to that disting- uished scientist and noble gentleman, Spen- cer F. Baird, who though he “labored fa: mankind with the world for a workshop,” Was yet ever ready to co-operate with our citizeus in every movement for the city's beauty and advancement. To him we ow: the first practical experiments and exhi- bition of the system of electric lighting, to him the revival of the free scientific lec tures, to him indeed more than to any other the United States National Museum, whose splendid exhibits, with those of the fsh commission (created by him), are now ellcit- ing the admiration of the world at the Co- lumbian expesition. ‘foo broad and noble to be either partisan, sectarian or sectional, Congress woul! honor itself in placing in at Albaugh’s on | fan Monday evening’ next, has been success in Louisville and ¢ Jansen is: everywhere recoguized as a com- edienne of high talents, which she supple- ments with her potent charm of personal has been se- lected under the guidance of experienced ard reputable preparations have been made for a lustrous erformance. 5 ompany is Miss May Merrick of who ts one of the finest look- n the stage. “A German Soldier. man dialect comedian and sweet singer, Mr. James A.
