In an: swer to the invitation mailed by the ¢om- mittee of arrangements a number of resi- dents of other sections of the District were present, and when the meeting adjourned at midnight, after four hours almost vainly spent in endeavoring to express by a series of resolutions the position and demands of the people most affected by the location of the factory, the residents of South Wash- generally extended. Among those who ac- cepted the invitation to attend the meeting was a delegation from the Home Rule Club of the District. The members of this dele- gation, headed by Mr. John H. Crane, oc- cupled no little time of the meeting in an- nouncing that they were for home rule here first, last and all the time, ‘and endeavored to impress upon the rest of those present that only by home rule could the garbage evil, and, indeed, all other evils, be re- moved. But, notwithstanding thelr elo- quence, their denunciation of about every- body who failed to agree with them, the meeting refused to follow where the flag of home rule led, and, intimating in rather positive language that the garbage factory and not home fule was the question of the hour, the members of the delegation with- drew at the eleventh hour, defeated, but de- fiant, and then the meeting quickly and in order accomplished the object of the call by unanimously adopting the following series of resolutions: ‘Whereas the National Sanitary Company thas caused to be erected at the foot of South Capitol street, in the city of Wash- ington, District of Columbia, a plant for the purpose of manipulating the garbage of said city; and Whereas the Odorless Excavating Com- pany has established a wharf at the foot of South Capitol street and uses the same for dumping the gatherings of the city into the river instead of placing the same on the scows for the purpose of being car- ried away from the city; and Whereas the plants of works of both said National Sanitary Company and Odorless ington undoubtedly regretted that their in-) vitations to attend the meeting had been so/ eral committee of arrangements, presiding. | Prayer was offered by P. Senator Stewart's Attack on the Prest- dent Has Injured the Silver Cause. The disclosure made by Senator Wolcott in the Senate today of @ purpose on the part of the managers of the Voorhees re- peal bill to prolong the session of the Sen-| ate next week until midnight each day makes public property of a thing that has been privately discussed for several days, and the episode in the Senate this morning indicates very clearly the feeling such a proposition excites on the part of the sfiver men. They have been expecting such a move for some time and their leaders as- sert that it will in no way hasten action on the Voorhees bill. They assert that this course will mark about the last effort on the part of the repealers, and they claim that its failure is already assured. What Has Been Promised. For some days the suggestion has been repeatedly made to the silver men that ff they would permit the Voorhees bill to go through without furiher obstruction they could rely on the assistance of a large num- ber of repealers toward the immediate pass- age of a measure favorable to silver. They have, however, shown an unwillingness to accept such uncertain promises as these, feeling that they did not carry with them the assurance of favorable action by the silver which Congress might pass. The public announcement by Mr. Gorman in the able to the iramediate passage. after disjos- ing of the Voorhees bill, of a measure of benefit and accommodation to the silver men fs a verification of what the silver men have been told privately that the repeaiers were willing to agree to it. This dectaration on the part of Mr. Gorman ts accepted as indicating his favorable dis- position toward compromise; but the amount Personalities indulged in on the floor of the Senate today and by the attacks on Mr. Cleveland made by Senator Stewart, it is Deiieved, lessen the chances of any sort of agreement and are Hable to prolong the President on any measure for the benefit of | Senate today that his disposition was favor- | Of feeling which has been excited by the | | of ceremonies.
