Local Teams Distinguish Themselves— ‘Work That Could Hardly Be Im- Preved—Details of the Shooting. ‘Staff Correspondence of The Evening Star. CAMP SPENCER, | SEA GIRT, August 16, 1893. | There have been many splendid exhibi- | tions of marksmanship at Sea Girt, but none that ever approached the one put uD to- day by three District of Columbia teams, |even the high-water mark of a year ago being of no further value as @ record. To- day's work can hardly be tmproved. From start to finish there was every evidence of superiority on the part of the teams from Hartman, Seventh Regiment, N. J. the engineer corps and the first and second regiments. The first’s team was weakened by the enforced absence of Capt. Cash, who, although much better, was by no means able to do hims«: justice, but the remainder rallied wonderfully and kept all competi- tors guessing and hustling In the most healthy fashion, winding up its known dis- tance endeavors within eight points of the Jeader—the engineer team. The efforts were Praiseworthy throughout and seemed to show conclusively that the District of Co- lumbla is not a total failure in the matter of athletics. Comparison of the scores with those made in 1892 is interesting. Then the sixteenth Pennsylvania was on top with 506 Points, the engineers second, with 4%, the first D. C. third, with 487, and the second D. fourth, with 473. ‘This year the engineers are eight points eas Cel. Clay at the Pool Target. ahead of the first and the first seven points ahead of the second; the top New Jersey team is twenty-one points behind the sec- ond D. C. regiment. How the skirmish will come out no one knows; in it the match will be won or lost. It will be noted that while the first regiment was then eighteen points behind the leaders it pulled out of the hole in the skirmish. But the engineers do not believe they can be beaten in the skirmish and will contest stubbornly for every point. The utmost good feeling pre- vails, not only between the home team: but also between the home teams and the Jersey aggregations. Everybody is smiling ae at Maj. Pollard. on everybody else and the entire camp seems to be happy. ‘Today's scores in all their details are as follows: Engineer Corps Team. ‘There’sa Bed Room Suite here | 20 yards. Corp. Tomlinson Disappointed. Capt. Tomlinson ts naturally disappointed at his team total and 1s deservedly being sympathized with. The captain's enthust- | astic enerzy is admirable and the enter- prise of his men in coming here at their own expense {s commended. The crowd would Ike to see them win, or at least achieve a good position. With a trifle more of experience they will puzzle competitors on any range. It takes time and a good deal of match practice for riflemen to over- come the assaults of nervousness; perhaps the skirmish totals will change the ap- pearance of things very materially. Gen. Ordway Arrives. Gen. Ordway arrived in camp this after- noon; came in very quietly, but was de- tained long enough at headquarters to give Capt. Bodwell. the District detachment a chance to as- semble in front of its headquarters and give its commanding general both a pre- cise military and a warm personal greeting. The eral thanked the boys—old and young—for their courtesy and when ranks were broken was for some time the center of @ crowd that told him all about the good work which had characterized the day's Proceedings. Half an hour later, while the general was sitting in front of the team headquarters tent, .Gov. Werts, Gen. Spencer, Gen. Donnelly, Gen. G. E. P. How- ard, Gen. Van Valen, and a large number of staff officers made a pleasant informal call on him. This evening Gen. Ordway went over to the Beach House; he intends staying here until Saturday, thus being present to wit- ness the conclusion of the interstate regi- mental match, the shooting in the Hilton Making a Bull's Eye. and National Rifle Association competitions and in the Wimbledon cup match. Capt. Barbour was expected here this evening; Maj. H. L. Cranford and Mrs. Cranford are looked for tomorrow. Other Washingtonians have partially promised be around by Friday. ssi soe Camp Notes. ‘The entire detachment, including Lieut. Laird, had a great laugh yesterday at the expense of Sergt. Page when, just prior to marching to the range, the sergeant was publicly presented with a baby’s bib, con- tributed by an unknown benefactor. Then the entire detachment, including Sergt. Page, had a great laugh at Lieut. Laird’s expense, the same anonymous donor having forwarded for the leutenant’s use a mini- ature pair of bathing trunks. The sergeant A Quiet Fish. has a trifle of advantage, for he can wear his bib, but it would be very much easter for a two-year-old camel to wobble through the eye of a darning needle than for the Meutenant to wriggle his rotundity into trunks that must have been constructed to fit a forty-nine-cent doll. While Private S. I. Scott of company A, engineer corps, was shooting at 500 yards this afternoon, someone said, so that he could hear, that the next shot would not be a bull’s-eye, simply because the old “ex- pert” had taken his rifle down to rest him- self a little. “You don’t know me,” remarked the doctor in his quiet way, and then he re- marked to his coach, “I'll fool him.” And he did—with a bull's-eye. va Private Colladay of the engifieer corps is the camp's most successful raconteur; has very many scraps of personal experience from which to draw. His tent mate is “Undress Uniform.” Sergt. Maj. P. W. Smith. The other even- ing Mr. Colladay had a good story to tell Mr. Smith, but could not remember the de- tails just when their presence was most es- sential. But at about 3 o'clock a.m., so it has been charged, Mr. Colladay awoke Mr. Smith to tell him the forgotten story. ‘There ts no truth in the rumor that Mr. Smith struck Mr. Colladay with a boot; Mr. Smith wears shoes. Maj. E. R. Campbell, tiring of shooting as an amusement, this afternoon took up with bicycle riding. A stout pneumatic tire saved the wheel from much of promised injury. —— BOILER MAKERS QUIT. Strike at the Baldwin Locomotive Works Against a Cut in Wages. Between 250 and 300 boflermacers em- Ployed at the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia quit work yesterday be- cause of a 10 per cent reduction In wage: notice of which was posted in the works last Friday. It is expected that other men will strike because of their sympathy for the botlermakers. Nearly 5,000 men are employed in the works, and almost all of them are affected by the reduction. Manager Vanciain says there will be no compromise. On the other hand, the men express themselves as being confideat that their wages will be restored. There is no organization among the empioyes. Mr. Vanclain says it was ‘he intention of the company to lay off about 2.5») men in a couple of weeks and the strike will there- fore not interfere with the oper ition of the works. Bage’s Catarrh Remedy. SUED HENRY VILLARD. Charges Against Leading Officials of the Northern Pacific. A Philadelphia stockholder of the North- ern Pacific railway has employed attorneys to bring sult against Henry Villard, Edwin H. Abbott, Charles L. Colby and Colgate Hoyt on the general charge of malfeasance in office and mismanagement of the affairs of the company in their capacity of direc- tors thereof. It is alleged that they bought for the Northern Pacific properties in which they were personally interested. In this manner they profited largely as individuals, whereas the road lost heavily. Ten millions of dollars is the sum named as the amount of the profits of these four directors. Ex-U. 8. District Attorney John R. Read of the firm of Read & Pettit of Philadelphia has addressed a formal communication to the directors of the Northern Pacific com- pany, requesting permission to bring sult in the name of the company against the al- Jeged misi @ directors. Mr. Read in- forms the directors that the suit will not gost them a cent, as their client is willing to bear all expenses. This step is taken because of the law’s re- quirement that aggrieved stockholders must first seek to have their representatives in control of a property apply for remedy. It 4s expected that the directors will decline to bring the suit, and in this event procesdings will immediately be commenced by the in- dividual who Is employing the attorneys. It is said that Brayton Ives, Henry Clews and Jay Cooke, jr., the committee who investi- gated the affairs of the road last year, are Dack of the suit. EDUCATIONAL. After Mable Shann had testijed in the trial of her mother at Trenton, N. J., yes- terday the defense rested, and the state called James Fitzpatrick in rebuttal. The witness was an intimate friend of young Shann, and under cross-examtnation testi- fied to visiting houses of ill-fame in Tren- ton. Thomas Lee testified that, in compeny with three other men, he was on Wither- spoon street at 2 o'clock the morn!ng of the mutilation. They walked past the Shann house on the opposite side of the street. No lights were visible in the Shann house. They saw no carriage and no pedestrians. Dr. Bergen being recalled, testided that Mrs. Shann and her daughters were mis- taken when they testified that for a long time he refused to call another physician in for consultation, although persistently 1e- quested to do s0. ‘The state offered in evidence the will of Mrs. Shann's late husband to show, in con- nection with her evidence, the motive she had In polsoning her son. ‘The first address to the jury was made by Assistant Prosecutor Apgar. Counsel for the defense will speak today, ind the jury be charged tomorrow morning, if not cht. Mr. Apgar went over the evidence in the case exhaustively, and urged the Jury to view it as he did as pointing to the gull of Mrs. Shann. ——_+e+--____ Helping Out John Cadahy. The affairs of John Cudahy, who figured so prominently in the recent lard corner in Chicago, are in a fair way for adjust. ment. John Cudaby's three brothers, Mik Edward and Patrick, have put their shoul- ders to the wheel and propose to extricate from the mire their less-fortunate brother. A new proposition was submitted yester- day to Mr. Cudahy’s creditors which prac- tically assures to them payment in full for all of their claims; $830,000 collateral will be put up to secure $750,000, or one-half the indebtedness, payments ‘to ‘be made on two and three years’ time. To cover the re- maining $750,00) of indebtedness the three brothers, Mixe, Edward and Patrick, bind themselves to pay $100,000 per anuun for five years into the hands of C. L. ifuteh- inson, president of the Corn Exchange National Bank, ag trustee, to be applied on the notes of John Cudahy. ‘This ar- rangement leaves but $170,000 of John Cud- ahy's notes unsecured.
