2 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. ©. FRIDAY, AUGUS1 18, 1893. A LIGHT DOCKET. Only Twenty-five Prisoners in the First Procession. Most of the Prisoners Were Charged ‘With Drunkenpess or Disorderly Comduct and Few Escaped. The atmosphere of the Police Court today showed a great improvement over pre- number of spectators. There were twenty-five prisoners, among them being only six females. This makes a total for the week of 230 prisoners. Recently the court has heard many cases of persons for trespassing on the grass about the city, and last night Officer Stea- house found one of the city’s guests en- joying a nap in a park near the Baltimore and Potomac depot. Eugene Gilbert was the name he gave, and he was the leader of this morning’s procession. A charge of vagrancy was read to him, and he answer- ed: “Guilty.” “What do you know about this man?’ asked the court. “I found him asleep in the last night.” answered the officer. “He came here from Missouri, has been here two weeks, has not worked for three weeks, 4nd has been on the tramp for a month.” What have you to say? Si your honor,” the prisoner an- ‘™ @ sick man, and am unable to ‘Tul send you down where you will get medical treatment,” said the court. lead guilty to a charge of Brotanity Re. A Bad Character Given Her. “A person of evil life and fame, found Grunk in Willow Tree alley,“ read the clerk to Alice Blackburn, a colored woman. “Are you guilty or not guilty?” “T ain't guilty,”” was her response. “This woman,” said Policeman Flathers, “lives in Willow Tree alley. She's a prosti- tute last night she was drunk and Brofan: ain't no prosecute,” she said, “and last ripen the police came in the alley 1 tall o another 2 to me, and Pol m go" ing to vag you.” But I'v and the Lord knows I ain't no vag. Just then a policeman arrested Officer Flathers gave her a bad name, and told the court that he had arrested her at least a dozen times. “Last night was the first time I had been in South Washington for two weeks,” said Bettie, “and I was looking for Vermont “Sixty days.” Cornelius Martin, a young colored man, Fave sickness as his excuse for not work- ing. He came from South Washington and the officers sald that he had been sent down, but that when he came out he re- to return to work. “He's too sick to work,” said his counsel. Other incidents in the man’s career were told and Judge Taylor sent bim down for thirty days for treatment. A quiet looking little colored girl, who gave her name as Priscilla Duckett, was charged with being loud and boisterous and the judge took her personal bonds. Hasband and Wife Both Fined. James Jones, a South Washington col- bred man, whose gray hairs indicated his age, and his wife Dora, a much younger person, were charged with having disturbed the quiet of South Washington. “Guilty, judge,” replied the woman, “and I would like to make a statement.” “What is it?” “Me and my old man were on the street Wanted him to go home and eat his Sieuittest becuse 1'oros inte for my service lace. Some other men who were with Gim‘st the time pushed him on, "snd whee I thought he was going to sirike me 1 screamed. you did?" ‘is that ‘Yes, sir. James Dodson’s profanity was more ag- Sravated than the ordinary case, and for aoe the penaily was made sv or irty days. “| was in the house when the policeman caught me,” said George Carter. “And so Was 1,” added Lucy Hobinson. The colored couple had possession of an unoccupied house in a South Washington alley when Oilicer Herbert arrested them. Ocher facts were stated about them, and they were given sixty days each. John H. Jones did not have % to pay for Bis liverty, and so he was given fifteen ¥3. a nigh was over Up for Crap Shootin: Wm. Gant of East Washington, the young colored man who was acquitted of tne mur- der of Peter Young, was in the processioa. Edward Marshall, a companion, was with hin. “These men,” said an officer, “were en- waged in a game of ‘crap Saturday night with sume otuer boys, woo have already heen arrested and ned.” “L wasn't ther,” was Marshall's expla- nation. ‘And I was not in the game,” was what Gant said. but the officer said he could not be mis- taken, and Judge ‘laylor fined the prisoners au or thirty days each. | In Judge Mills court Julius Adams was | charged with crueity to his wile. There| was (roubie in the Adams family, and Ju- hus’ temper got the betier of him. in a moment of passion he struck his wife, and ime he was surry for it.
