Faxpznick, Mp., June 28, 1898, Two out of the three graduates of the Academy of the Visitation, B. V. M., this city, young ladies, Miss Helena M. King and Miss Mary V. Carr, and they were both awarded gold, medals as certificates of graduation. The clos- ing exercises were attended by a great many from Washington and the District of Columbia, and were very beautiful and interesting. A feature was the anunal display of art and needle work by the pupils, among which were speci- mens of distinguished merit by Missex Green, Carr, Harvey, O'Donnelly, Pierce and Hutchin- son of the District of Columbia. Among the Washington young Indies who were awarded in the several departments were the fol- wing: Prize medal for Christian doctrine, Miss Helena M. King; prize gold medal in senior department of Christian doctrine, Miss Annie L. Hanlon; prize silver medal in junior department of Christian doctrine, Miss Louise 4H. Ex-State Controller L. Victor Baughman received a number of distinguished guests from Washington yesterday, who arrived this after- noon and were driven to““Poplar Terrace," Co's Baughman's country home near this city, where they were handsomely entertained. The party consisted of Senators Blackburn, Ransom and Gibson, Congressman John Allen and Jud; Louis E. McComas. ‘They were joined here by Chief Judge James E. McSherry and driven to the battlefield of Gettysburg in Col. Baugh- man’s cross-country drag. A relay of horses will be on hand at Mechanicatown, this count; and after being driven over the battlefield they will return to Col. Baughman’s residence, where they will be entertained. Secretary Morton, Commissioner Porter and ex-Post- master General Hatton were to have been of the party, but were detained in Washington by official business, LOCAL WREELMEN. Eight members of the Washington Road Club arrived here Sunday and were entertained at the City Hotel. A portion of the wheelmen loft Washington at Go'clock the night before and arrived here early in the day. ‘The others left Washington Sunday morning and got hero in the afternoon. They all returned to Washing- ton by way of New Market and Ridgeville, meet- ing twenty members of the Frederick Bicycle Club at the latter place. BLEW HIS HEAD OFF. Frank Bowhan of this county, a tailor by oc- cupation, brought « life of dissipation to a sud- den and tragic close the other day. The tax rate of Frederick county, including state and county tax, bas been fixed by the board of county commissioners for the ensuing year at 798 cents on the #100, of which sam 62 cents is for county tax and 17%{ cents for state tux. The levy is made or a taxable basis uf 229,992,000 and the rate is the same as last year. TO CELEBRATE THE FOURTH. ‘The Philomathean Literary Society, a promi- nent organization of Frederick, will celebrate the Fourth of July by holding « public meeting in the City Opera House in the evening, W. Croffutt of Washington having accepted'an in- Vitation to deliver the address on the occasion, He has chosen for his subject, “The Folly of War as an Agent of Justice.” SURVEYS FOR RAILROADS, Surveys are now being made throagh the streets of Frederick that are to be traversed by the electric railway between Frederick and Middletown, and active work upon the con- struction of the, road is, expected to begin almost any day. ‘The New York capitaliste in- terested in the project have been in the city several days, and they announce that the pros pects for the success of the road are very bright, RABIES IN CATTLE, A peculiar disease has recently affected the stock on the farm of Robert Wachter, near Gracebam, this county, that bas resulted in the loss of a large number of horses, cowsand hogs. ‘The diseuse resembles the rabies in many ways, and is supposed to have originated by a cow and bull on the place being bitten by one of the numerous mad dogs that have intested that sec- tion of the county. ‘The cow and buil died in great agony refusing water and plow- ing up the ground, in their wild frenzy eating the clay flooring of their stalls. ‘The othe mals, however, have not shown violent toms, but have been easily handled and wonld drink water. Nothing bas aa yet saved any of the affected animals from death. Correspondence of The Evening Star. Kexsrotox, Mp., June 29, 1893. On Friday evening Inst the Library Awocia- tion of St Paul's M. E. Church met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Figgins, New officers were elected for the year and from re- ports of last year's work and receipts the association was shown to be in x prosperous condition. An interesting program, consisting of niusic and recitations, was rendered. The association adjourned to meet at the home of Mr. W. H. Wheatley in July. Last evaning the Ladies’ Aid Society of St. Paul's M. E. Church held a ‘birthday party” on the lawn at the home of Mr. and Mra. J. F. Stoek.
