A Material Kise in the Death Rate Last Week. “There was a material rise in the death rate during last week, following closely upon the Prevalent weather of high temperature,” says the report of Health Officer Hammett. “The deaths numbered 177 as against 153 for the corresponding period of last year. This in- crease is mainly due to the very large number of children under five years of age who died, ‘mostly from summer complaints. These num- bered eighty-eight, or one-half of the whole death list. And then’ again, of these seventy- nine were infants less than & year old. “Aside from these the mortality is not un- usual. No especial sickness afflicts the city. The acute lung diseases have shrunk to limits which no longer excite notice, while no denth from typhoid fever was reported and only one from fever. But two new cases of diphtheria and four of scarlet fever were re- ported, with two deaths from the former and none from the latter. *etan additional death from the calamity at Ford’s Theater occurred during the week, and altogether eleven violent deaths are recorded.
