A Remarkable Food Which is Covering Frederick County. From Tax Stan's regular correspondent at Frederick, Md., comes an account of a marvel- ous fall of manna in that section. The peculiar natural phenomenon hasbeen discovered in the northwest section of the county the past few days. Ithas been ascertained to bea fall of honey dew, such as Josephus, the historian of Jews, says composed the manna upon which the Iereclites ‘wero fed. ‘Tho dew ws a sweet, sticky substance, pleasant to tho taste, and covers the leaves and branches of trees and bushes in the mountains to such an extent in some instances that it trickles down from leaf to leaf. It is thought by some to be the exere- tions of insects and by others attributed to the pollen from fiowers. It makes a splendid bee food, and wherever it has fallen the bees have attacked it with ravenous appetites. jhe Farther Break in Silver. Watt Street, New Yorx, June 28. A Policeman Who Secured a Sharp Crit cism in a Liquor Case. Several liquor cases, in which jury trials had been demanded, were set for hearing in Judge Miller'scourt yesterday and twoof the cases were disposed of before recess. The first case tried was that of Mary Matthews, a colored woman who has « lunch room at 2328 7th street. She had been suspected of keeping a “speak easy,” and acting under orders from Sergt. Jordan Policeman Geo. W. Greer went there to get some beer, and he appeared on the witness stand to tell his story. He first visited ‘there one day about two weeks ago and asked for beer, but the woman told him she did not sell intoxicanta He told her he had been there before, and she finally sent her child to get it (beer) fur him as an accommodation. Witness admitted that he = heran untruth about his having been there fore. The second time he went there she repeated her statement and her brother, who came in at the time, told defendant she could let witness have one of his bottles. “Is there any other if?" asked the court. “This is all,” replied the officer. “How long have you been on the force?” “Six weeke.” “Well, 'll tell you one thing,” added Judge Miller, ‘the next time you figure in any such transaetion you will be for aiding and abet ‘ou had better learn something more about procuring proof before you at tempt such a thing again. Had you in her place before first visit you men- tioned?” ° ‘No, sir,” replied the officer. ‘Then you told an untrath.”” ‘The jury returned a verdict of not guilty and Lawyer Moss, who appeared for the defendant, was not even pat to the necessity of examining the witnesses. John L Leonard, the dealer at 34 and I streets southwest, was next tried and acquitted, but was not permitted to leave the court. There were two convictions against him and fines amounting to $550 or four months in jail had been im ware rou ready to pay the fines?” the judge asked him. ‘No. sir,” replied Leonard. ‘Then you will have to go to {ail,” added the judge. Deputy Marshall McCaffrey took charge of him and unless the five is paid he will have to goto jail. Fireworks in the Daytime. This unusual sight may be witnessed at Bay Badge on Jaly Fourth. Products in ‘Homes Wherever Bright Sun Shines, Two Hundred Happy, Employes. Busy Living Poems Better Than All the Ballads. Burlington Buildings a Model of Convenience. ‘There ta not a village in the United States where the Wells & Richardson Company 1s not known. And the demand for their lactated food has been 80 widespread that ithas led them to establish branches in foreign countries. A large and pros- perous business is done by their branch house at ‘Montreal. From their London branch lactated food ts sent to all parts of the world, a large trade being done in Southern Africa and in India, and an Australian branch is located at Sydney, N. 8. W. From their central offices in Burlington, Vt., they send their pure food almost everywhere that the sun sbines, to gladden the hearts of those who are blessed with children. It was Longfellow whosaid: ‘Ye are better than all the ballads ‘Aad all the rest are dead. And a visit{to the big establishment in Burlington, where, asthe hot weather approaches and infant troubles multiply, every effort is made to supply the increased demand for lactated food, gives one the impression that the employers and employed are in full sympathy with the parents who are their customers. The working force of the company numbers 200 men and girls, saying nothing of nearly 100 others in outside employments whose services are constantly required. And there is a singular air of contentedness about them. The friendiest relations exist between the compsny and the employes. They have thelr Saturday half- holidays; the buildings are models of arrangement, eat, light and airy, and as convenient as'eah be made, and no one seems to feel that he fs doing any drudgery. Itts a place where willing hands find Plenty to do. It was no longer ago than 1885 that the company first became interested in the manufacture of sugar of milk, which is the basis of the infant's natural food. ‘The company showed its enterprise in locating tts co-operating establishment for the making of this sugar in Iiinols, where sufficient supply of pure milk could best be found. Preceding ‘the year 185 sugar of milk had been made exclu- sively in Europe, and although many attempts had been made in this country to manufacture it from the whey of our cheese factories, every attempt had met with disastrous failure, and much money had been lost. Undeterred by other failures, however, {twas determined, with the assistance of Prof, Sabin of the University of Vermont, to enter upon the trial of anew process. This proved very suc- cessful, and for several years large quantities of ‘this article have been manufactured. Under the advice of some of the best medical authorities in the country, the firm embarked in the manufacture of a food for infants and invalids, of which this pure American milk sugar should be ‘the basis; and again a professor in Vermont's fa- mous university became interested, and has from first to last had direct supervision of the food. ‘This ts called lactated food and has become inval- uable for the nutrition of infants and invalids.
