TRAINING HAND AND EYE. —_—_.___ An Interesting Collection From the Schools Now Arranged in the Franklin Bullding— Boys and Girls Who Have Learned to De- sign and Make Things. Seno cence ‘The good people cf this city do. not have to &0 to Chicago in order to see acreditable and | interesting exhibition. Such a display was opened up to the public last evening in the form of a permanent exhibit of the work of the students of the public schools of the Dis- trict as samples of what they can do after the Preperation that comes from # thorough course of manual training. ‘The exhibit is in the big hall at the top of the Franklin school building, and well repays a visit not only from the parents of the scholars in the public schools, but from all those who are interested in the work of the development of the latent possibilities of the young. It is no small thing to realize that a boy of ‘fiftecn can make a turning lathe of iron and steel that isa masterpiece of workmanship and that is of a sort that makes it good enough to be used in any shop. It is no small thing for agirl of the same age to be able to design, cut and fitadress that in style, appearance ‘and finish would do credit toan experienced modiste. Yet exhibite of this sort are to be seen now at the Franklin Sehool, and are enough to make the most chronic grumbler leave off his com; it that the students in our schools y are not being taught any- thing useful The exhibit opened last evening, and while but little was known of it there was a fair attendance.and all those who saw it were enthusiastic in their praise of the system which could show such ood resulta, exhibition will be open from. Row on, morning, afternoon and evening, and it is thought that the attendance will increase Until it taxes the resources of the big hall. MANUAL TRAINING IN THE SCHOOLS. For some years past the system of developing ‘the manual skill of the students in the local schools has been followed out under the general direction of Supt. Powell, whois a firm be- liever in the virtues and good results of this system. Each year the methods pursued have been enlarged and perfected. New ideas have been introduced, and the character of the work done has been correspondingly im- proved until now the work turned out by some of the higher grades would do credit to old and workmen. The exhibit is arranged in an attractive man- ‘ner about the hall, beginning at the left of the entrance door and continuing about the room until the same door is reached 'again, where one may see the handiwork of the most advanced students. Between the two extremes there is a regular gradation, so that by following the ex- hibits about carefully one can get a very good idea of the methods pursued in this credit- able work. At first one may see the radest kind of drawings, straight lines and curves, the work of the little shavers, but done as carefully and well as they can; simple reproductions in peed of potatoes and apples that still show the marks of the little fingers. At the other side of the room there ate specimens of molding and modeling that show not only care, but developed genius as well; designe for the exteriors aud interiors of buildings that would not shame an experienced architect either in the matter of originality or in the skill with which the drawings have been exe- cuted. Some of this sort of work is of a quality that sbould insure the boy's employment in an itect's office without much trouble. Aside from the practical side of the question—the dollars and cents side, so to speak there must be a good result from ‘the system that teaches — todevelop the resources that are in A SIX-INCH GUN MODEL. An interesting exhibit, as showing to what degree of skill the boys can be brought by ap- plication and training, is a little model of a six- inch gun, worked out of steel and complete in all ite little details. Turning lathes, tools of iron and wood, ornamental iron and brass work, iron tongs, monkey wrenches, bammers and bundreds of articies of that sort show how well the boys have been taught to use their hands as wellas their minds. Nor is one side of the edtica- tion of the young developed at the expense of the other. A comparatively small amount of time is devoted to manual training and yet the re-| tural eults are really surprising. There are tabies and bookcases that show what good carpenters the boys can be. There isa pair of Indian clubs made of four pieces of joined wood each and as nently done as if made ina turning Inthe, while in point of fact they were made by a boy with » plane anda knife. He was taught the useful accomplishment of doing the very best possible with the tools he had at band. An interesting feature in con- nection with the work is the fect that be- the actual manufacture of au article even of the simplest sort they are taught to draw the desigus for what they are going to do, to make the blue prints and ‘the lettering and to get EIGHTEEN PAGES TOMORKOW. There are specimens of “wood carving and wood turning that show not only the skill of the students in handling their tools, but a marked aptitude for the work as well. TRE PROGRESS OF THE WORK. From the simplest drawings there is a steady Progress shown through the different years up tothe fourth-year work in the High School, when some very creditable drawings from casts and from figures, water-color sketches and sketches from still life are to be seen. Nor 18 the work by any means all theoretical. There are sampies of demgning work that would have commercial value in the market. There are designs for wall papers, done in color and with most pleasing effecta, Although rather less extensive in scope than the work of the boys the exhibit made by the girl in the public schools is quite us creditable ‘The Newark Be | in this work, and before Septembler 1 probably, sail for her ‘as flagship of jouth Adatiochticn, nies Range of the Thermometer. The girls are taught, as are the boys in line of work, to design the work they gre going todo. “They are taught to ent and fit by the most approved systems and make their patterns and designs in paper in a thor- oughly scientific way. Some of the work is so food that it seems lard to believe that it has n done by girls of fifteen and sixteen. THE RICH AS WELL As THE POOR, Curiously enough, it isnot the children of the poor whohave takenall the interest in this man- ual training. According to Mr. Powell some of the very best work among the girls has been Ps done by the daughters of rich parents, who may never have to make their own dresses, but who realize that it is good thing for them to know bow they should be made. The same | thing is true with the bors, Many of them will never have occasion to seck employ- ent as iron workers or wood turner, Not all of them are embryo architects and artists. Still their ta have seen the good effects that come from efficient training tn the use of one's hands and have lent their heartiest co-opera- tion to the teachers in their work. OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS, “T hope that Tux Stan will call attention to this exhibition,” said Superintendent Powell to a Star this morning. “I want every one to see it who is in any way interested in the education of the young, for I think that this collection reflects the ‘grentest credit on the scholars and on their teachers. It has not been done at the expense of the other branches of sducation, either. For example, the girls only sew for an houraweek, and I feel confident that g00d results accomplished make the best kind of a return for the time «peut. Tho girls and the boys, too, look on this work as a sort of relaxation and change from their other work and seem to take the greatest interest in it. I would like to have | this | | with lay of the sort they will see there. If any it doesn't, then let them come back and find all the fault they want with our system.
