4 _THE_ EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. Jane 1, 1993. ‘ditor. THE EVENING STARK has a regular and permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that efany other paper in the city. As a local NEWS paper and Ad- vertising Medium it has ne competitor. The fate of Dr. Briggs had not been decided ata late hour this afternoon. By the vote of the General Assembly last night he was con- Yieted om the charge of heresy, but the judgment of the assembly had not been formulated when these lines were written. Of course, logically, Dr. Brigzs must be expelled from the ministry or suspended until be recants. Dr. Briggs’ course has been such that it is not probable that he will recant. As remarked by a member of the assembly in a speech yesterday, the Presbyterian Church could not stamp out the new theology he repre- sented by stamping out Dr. Briggs. Strong , evidence of the truth of this assertion was given im the assembly at today’s session, for in the hot. debate that eptang up in regard to the inerrancy of the Bible words were spoken be- side which Dr. Briggs’ most objectionable utter- ‘ances would seem to be the primmest kind of orthodoxy. There is no one in a Christian Jand, whether in the Presbyterian Church or out of it, who would, if he cared for the good of his country, undertake to unsettle the faith of the people iz the Bible as containing the teachings which God wished the people to have; so the Church has the support in & general way of all good people in its effort to maintain the unimpeachable character of the Bible as the word of God. Still that it is necessary to declare that every word and line are inerrant, asa matter of his- tory as well as = matter of faith, is something which many of the most thoughtful and reverent believers question. The fact that 116 members of the assembly, including some of the most scholarly men in that bods, voted prac- tieally to acquit Dr. Briggs shows that in that great Church, there are many who believe in the liberty of thought, study and criticism claimed by Dr. Briggs. They declare that they do not fear that the Higher Criticiam can injure the truth or detract from the value of the Bible. ‘The action of the assembly brings up an in- teresting question as to its relations with the great theological seminary, which, despite the as- sembly’s condemna:ion, has stood by DrgBriggs. If Dr. Briggs is exvelied this seminary must either retract its utterances made in support of Dr. Briggs or go with Dr. Briggs out of the chureh, and teach theology according to its own lights, irrespective of the standards ad- hered to by the General Assembly. At any rate it will be interesting to see what the sentiment of the assembly wiil bes year hence when similar questions come up in the case of Prof. Henry Preserved Smith. ‘The Briggs men claim that their numbers have been growing, and that if a postponement could have been secured for an- other year they would have been on nearly even terms with the conservatives. ——_<+eo—___ ‘That the making of a diocese of Washington and the establishment here of a great cathedral should pe the more important topics discussed at the Protestant Episcopal convention now in session in Baltimore is not at all surprising. With more solid rapidity than is evident to many outside the communion the Episcopal Church in this region continues to grow daily. Since Bishop Paret was placed at the bead of the diocese of Maryland the work of his exalted office bas steadily increased until now it is too much for one man’s physical energy. Speak- ing of this the bishop said yesterday that di- vision will be absolutely necessary before long, and that in his opinion it would not be wise to wait unfil the necessity became oppress- ively apparent. “In the city of Washington,” said he, “God has given us national opportn- nities and national responsibilities. Powers of all kinds are centering there. The ehurch should be strongly represented there. 1t was the rule of the church in its best and earliest days that every strong city should have its bishop. And if there is a city in our land where more than in others that rule should be followed it is Washington. Other religious Dodies have taken bold steps to take possession. We should not allow re for the dignity of our own strength, nar a7# loving the diocese as i8 is. to s' oo progress.” Apress of the wtvarteges consequent Brea exéeasive ant imposizg representation in this city was also evident im the opening scr- mon preached by the Rev. Murance Bue} of Cumberland. He advoented the upzearing ». of a grand cathedral as a means to the ond of greater glorification of the church, its mission, and its motive force. The preparatory local endeavor has proceeded smoothly; the Protest- ant Episcopal Foundation has legal and active existence; public sentiment is unanimously fa- vorable; large donations of land and money have been made and in alittle while there will | group. THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY. JUNE 1. 1893—TWELVE PAGES, arrivals, If by any chance the unwelcome visitor passes the gate without detection, ho is apt to meet an officer from hisown home at any point within the grounds. And if, in spite of these chances against him, he picks a pocket, or attempts tosteal anything, an alarm will find the gates at every point of exit furnished with a description of the offender.” And yet some expert succeeded in breaking mtoa guarded showcase, right under the noses of Chief Bon- field's sleuths. He got away with his booty and is still at liberty. He was either exceptionally clever or very Iucky and a duplication of his darmg deed is by no means probable. Exhib- itors and visitors may and doubtless will appre- ciate the police precautions. Cpa as age In the Baltimore circuit court yesterda; Judge Dennis decided that the City Passenger Railway Company has the right to erect trolley poles and string wires therefrom on Baltimore street. Weextend to our sister city renewed assurances of our distinguished commiseration, and trust that when one or more of the big business houses on that thoroughfare happen tobe on fire that noneof the plucky fire- fighters or inuccent spectators may achieve speedy dissolution through the volt-laden ob- structions which will speedily go up. Thonght- ful people continue to be surprised at the over- bead-trolley extensions in Baltimore and else- where when they remember that in this city and at least two other cities there are in auc- cessful operation underground systems that render the use of the overhead trolley entirely Unnecessary and inexcusable, Who says that figures cannot lie? According to the Baltimore American our base ball team is sixth in the race for the pennant; the New York Tribune, Herald and Times insist that we are in eighth place, while the sporting mathe- maticians on the New York Sun, World and Recorder put usin the ninth hole. The last calculation is correct, but the calculators can- not keep us there, — +0 A Baltimore policeman who jlived up to police traditions by going to sleep while on duty has been dismissed from the force. This summary action of the police board is open to criticism. The authorities should not have acted without first warning the officers that a time-honored eustom would hereafter be re- garded as an offence. —__ +so— Some trolley electricity broke into a Brook- lyn house, melted the water pipes, eet fire to the roof and conducted itself m a generally reprehensible manner. We are fast approach- ing a period where it will be hard to find any- thing objectionable that is not included in the trolley’s list of achievements, The eastern coal agents hare advanced the price once more, but the average consumer will at this season regard the step with nothing more than mild curiosity. Incidental to the interment was military pomp and the mourning of thourands whose } hearts once throbbed in sympathy with the cause that was lost forever at Appomatox. A wealth of eulogy has been poured over ths ex- shieftain’s body and his praises have been sounded afresh from the Rio Grande to the James, but there was absence of such expres- sions as call forth objection or reawaken bi ter controversy.
