Prof. Duffield asserted that Dr. Smith was still in the church. There were protests from the floor at this statement, but Dr. Herrick Johnson was P| nized and said that the action of Union Semi nary might seem to be uncoremonious, but it should be stated at the last assembly it was understood that no further action shoula be taken until the entire question of the compact was submitted to arbitration. This statement was contradicted by Dr. Roberts, who said that the minutes of the com- mittee showed no such understanding. Dr. Johnson said of course not, and then went onto speak of the veto power of the assembly. Prof, Dufield said that he opposed the report disapproving the action of the directors of Lane Seminary. The reasons stated in the re- were not good ones. Dr. Smith was suspended as ® member of the presbytery and from the ministry, but he was still a member of the church. er. De, Raberteoe of New York said that it was understanding that the suspen- sion from the ministry involved membership in the church. The chairman of the committee, Rev.
