Activity on the Canal and in Real Estate Circles—Money Being Raised for the Bath- ing Beach — Pleasant Social Matters—En- tertainment for Children’s Country Home. eee To the south of M street and between 28th and the creek there is a place ‘that bids fair to rival in filthiness the worst plague spots of the city. A sewer whose discharge is of the deadliest kind that a thickly populated section could throw off empties itself ‘upon the surface of the earth fully 200 feet from the creek and throws its sickening odors into the air breathed by a hundred large families. Then, with a struggle, it oozes its way along on the ground to the creek, stopping every few minutes to go below the surface, only to reappear a few feet beyond. Often small dead animals are seen at the mouth of this disease-breeding sewer, and the odors then sent forth are doubly affecting. Not only at this point, but at others along the creck can be noticed similar sights. In July, 1892, Senator Jas. McMillan, who has always taken such an interest in the District, spoke officially to the Commissioners of the condition of Rock creek and its tributary sewers.and rec- ommended that an order be issued to the health officer to weekly opon the gates at the mouth of the creek that the worst filth could go off into the river. This was done several times, but since February 19, 1898, ac- cording toa gentleman who has kept a record seals ‘Sunday (the Gat ext part) bat °) on e twice, viz..
