Itis “Off Because It Could Not Be Made a Creditable Displa: The proposed “naval rendezvous” at An- napolis on the occasion of the commencement exercises at the Naval Academy June 1 is “off.” A Bran reporter was so informed by Secretary Herbert today. It is only fair to the Secretary, however, to say that he conveyed this informa- tion in language entirely devoid of slang. The reason for the failure of the project is obvious. ‘There are not enough ships available to make a worthy display. ‘The Secretary corresponded with the mayor of Baltimore on the subject and it was agreed between them that it would be unfair to the peopie interested to offer them a naval display that would be small and insig- nificant in comparison with the recent demon- stration at Hampton Roads and at New York, ‘This is due to the fact that the majority of the vessels that participated in those events cannot possibly visit Annapolis at the time in- dicated. Most of the foreign ships of war have left our shores and only a few of our own fleet could be spared for this service. It was there- fore concluded that asa creditable naval dis- play, at Annapolis at this time was impossible 'y stress of circumstances, it was better not to have any at alland in that way spare the citi- zens concerned the expenses into which their hospitable intents would undoubtedly havo led eu. Ses Army Orders. The leave of absence granted Second Lieut, Marcus D. Cronin, twentieth infantry, is ex- tended fifteen days on account of sickness, The leave of absence granted Capt. Benjamin H. Gilman, thirteenth infantry, is extended twenty-three days on surgeon's certificate of disability. Leave of absence for four months is granted First Lieut. Arthur Murray, first artillery. eg Again in Trouble. Complaint is made to the War Department that Lieut. Geo. B. Backus, first cavalry, isa serious delinquent in his financial obligation: and it is not unlikely that he will be court-mar- tialed. Lieut. Backus is the officer who startled his superiors about a yearngo by officially an- nouncing his intention to kill himself. —-e- ‘To Accompany Mr. McAdoo. Chief Naval Constructor Wilson and Naval Constructor Hitchborn will accompany Assist- ant Secretary McAdoo to Baltimore tomorrow evening to attend the banquet in honor of the cruiser Detroit. ae Lieut. Reeder Must Go to Sea. Lieut. Commander W. H. Reeder has been ordered to duty as executive of the United States steamer Charleston, now fitting out at Norfolk for service on the Pacific station. This officer has just finished a three years’ term at the Naval Academy, and influential friends made a strong effort to have him retained there for another year, The Secretary concluded, however, that Mr. Reeder must take his turn at sea service like all other officers and detached him from duty at the academy and ordered him to the Charleston accee eSPe eeerere) A Trip to the Mountains Ended. Last night Officers Harlow and Horn arrested two young adventurers and they are held at the sixth precinct till arrangements can be made for returning them to their homes in Newburg, N.Y. They arrived by train on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, and each had a small rifle, small revolver, bull’s-eye lantern, compass and fishing line, but the money had given out and they could go no further. They gave the names of Glerret Keefe, aged twelve, of 52 Courtney avenue, and Elmer Truesdell, aged fifteen, of No. 8 ihe same avenue, and frankly stated’ that they got the money on which to travel this far, #20, from their parents, and rigging themselves’ out had started for the mountains and to see some life. Licut. Kelly made them as comfortable as possible and their parents will be communicated with. —— (Crim!
