2 = THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. 6. THURSDAY, MAY Tl. 1898—TEN PAGES. OLD TICONDEROGA. fhe Anniversary of Its Capture Celebrated at Marshall Hall. THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE REVOLUTION ENJOY A DELIGHTFUL SAIL DOWN THE RIVER, FAT PLANKED SHAD AND LISTEN To WITTY AND PATRIOTIC ADDRESSES. Heaven's brightest smile played merrily over the earth yesterday to brighten up the land- scape and enliven the waters of the Potomac tor the patriotic orders which on the pretty Jowns under the shade trees of Marshall Hall celebrated the one hundred and eighteenth anniversary of the capture of Ticonderoga in an appropriate manner. Each year this im- portant event of the revolution is made the oc- casion of an outing by the Sons of the Ameri- can Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the Revolution. The Sons and daughters, and mothers and fathers, and perhaps afew cousins, enjoyed the day, than which a more perfect one never shone. ‘The steamer River Queen had been chartered for the day, and at 1 p.m., while the orchestra rendered a patriotic air, the vessel cast off its hawver and started down the stream. carrying about 150 of the members of these societies. The sail was thoroughly enjored,so charming was the weather. The time was devoted to making acquaintances, and the bright eonver- sation soon made the trip slip by. As Alexan- dria was reached one patriotic soul inquired of her neighbor: “What other subject of interest is there in the town besides the church which Washington attended?” “There is one of the most remarkable sights in America,” was the reply. ‘Look and you €an see the spot which stands perfectly still while all the rest of the country progresses at a killing pace.” At Marshall Hall the ladies at once made for the place where the chef was cooking in the open air the planked shad. They were greatly imerested in the affair and watched it until there was a danger that they themselves would be baked. as the fire isa very warm one. While the dinner was being prepared the party broke up, each to seek bis own amusement. The bowling alleys were utilized and some of the la- dies showed that they were adepts with these Pins, as well as others which they do not expect to come down. The shooting gallery was more liked by the gentlemen, but it is feared that their ancestors would have fought an almost bloodless revolution had they not been better shots with their old fiintlocks than some of their sons, who tried in vain and used up all the ammunition in efforts to knock 4 pipe out of the mouth of an advocate of “home rule.” PLANKED SHAD AND ORATOR’ Gathered in the dining hall, after prayer by the Rey. Dr. Suyder, the planked shad was at- tacked. There was a terrible onslaught. and the forces of the enemy were being rapidiy decimated when a regiment of colored infantry with white aprons led in the reinforcements end the slaughter was renewed. The blood red flowed, but some preferred water, and for over an hour the contest was waged. Finally Gen, Breckinridge called a halt, while the American dag was waved over the assembly. “Sons of your fathers, you won a victor: Planked Shad Landing of which your ancestors might well be proud.” The president of the society made a very bright address, which every one appreciated. Now and then it touched upon ‘ficonderoga and Ethan Allen, but st flitted along in glittering sparks of witti- cisms, which made it enjoyable to listen to. At the close of Gen. Breckinridge’s remarks the American flag was saluted in Chautauqua style. the handkerchiefs of the assemblage ing waved eaci time the national emblew was dipped. After each speech a quartet of excel- lent male voices sang a selection. Gen. Breck- inridge acted as toastmaster, and well did he fill the position. He introduced each speaker with « well-turned piece of humor. which never failed to strike home. Gen. A. W. Greely fol- lowed the president, responding to the subject of “The next century.” He expressed it as his belief that the next century was to be the women’s century, and he would be among the first to welcome them to the position they should occupy in this world. we was @ danger.bowever, that. blinded by their snecesses, they might overreach their mark. Gen. Greely’s address was an eloquent one, which the audience highly appreciate. Ex-Commismoner Douglass made one of his ebsracteristically bright post-prandial talks. Like Gen. Breckinridge, he did not allow his subject to hamper his ideas, and by the time he hhad reached his topic he had the audience in such good spirits that to drop to seriousness would have been shameful, so, while they were all lnughing. he closed, having made one of the best speeches of the afternoon. Mr. Ernest Wilkinson was called upon in the absence of Justice Brewer, who was detained by the Chinese case before the Supreme Court. ‘His address was delivered in an earnest tone, which was in contrast with the light bits of Pleasantry which bad preceded. He was went, and when he finished was heartily for bis happy thoughts. . J. Tabor Johnson closed the speech- making in an argument which was to controvert ‘the statement made by every individual that his ‘ticular branch of the army or navy had been most instrumental in making the revolution successful by showing that had not the medical Profession been on hand to keep the camps and soldiers free from contagion the result might have been different. After Dr. S. K. Hall had delivered a recitation apropos of the occasion tho assemblage broke up, but gathered again on the poreh of the dining hall, where they were ‘A vote of thanks was unanimously passed by the meeting thanking Col. McKibben for the courtesies he bad shown and for his personal interest in the welfare of all. ‘The return was made pleasant by the singing of the quartet, the masic of the orebestra and the recitations of Miss Ethel Armes. The Steamer reached her wharf short after 8 e'clock. The quartet consisted of Alexander Mosher, first tenor; Frank W. Bird, second: J. Henry Kaiser, first bass, and Chas. W. Han- ock, second. THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED. Among those present were Gen. and Mrs. George H. Shields, A. Howard Clark, William Van Zandt Cox, Bernard R. Green, Ernest Wil- kinson, Dr. J. W. Bayne.
