CHAIRMAN CARTER INDORSED —— STRIKING THE KEYNOTE, Address of President James 8. Clarkson te the League of Kepublican Clabs. Lovisviiae, May 10. ‘Undismayed by the rout of a few months ago when their political adversaries for the first time in nearly three decades secured control of every branch of the government, but fall of enthusiasm and hope for the future, the representatives of the young republicans of the United States assembled m. annual convention in Macauley’s Theater ths morning. It was a pretty wight that greeted the advance guard of delegates to the league of republican clubs when the doors were opened. The ‘Diat— form had been banked with the choicest of nd exotics, which shed pacious audito- growing flowers, palms their fragrance’ through the rium. Before the chair mammoth shield, supported on either side with silken flags, Stretched across the par- quet from the proscenium boxes was “silver filigree transparency the names of all the states and territories of the Union. From gallery to floor the pillars were twined with tri-colored bunting and thousands of miniature flags encircled the balconies, «us- pended from the chandeliers and formed an archway through the long corridor and out to the sidewalk. Over this there fluttered an immense “Old Glory.” EVERY SEAT FILLED, Spurred to promptitade by an invitation to witness the Kentucky derby in the afternoon the delegates were lively in getting together, and by 10 o'clock. the bour designated in the official call, every seat on the main floor as well as in the balccny and gallery had its occupant. Several hundred ons were content with anding room, while fully a thousand, mere were denied admission as a result of the crowded condition of the interior. ‘The California delegation marched in behind large white wiiken bannerette, with the in- teription: “Grover can't fool all ‘the people all the ume.” ‘The galleries cheered this to the echo as it was carried on the stage and the band assisted the enthusiasm with the Star Spangled Banner. ‘The convention was opened with prayer by Rev. Dr. J. H. Heywood of the Unitarian Church. Mayor ‘Tyler, who was heartily cheered, delivered the address of welcome in behalf of the city. He said that he was giad as the democratic mayor of a democratic city to greet so large and influential a gathering of their republican brethren, and the city of Louisville would do its utmost to give them @ genuine Kentucky welcome. Gen. J. L. Crawford of Newport weleomed the convention for the state league and Mr. Augustus E. Wilson for the republicans of Louisville. Upon being presented as presiding officer of the day Col. irew Cowan, a tonal” soaschont and one of the oldest republicans in the state, was greeted with repeated cheers. He briefly —e ius appreciation of the compliment and then the oficial call for the convention was read by Secretary Humphrey. After the address of welcome Mr. Clarkson resumed the chair. He looked pale and weak after his illness of vesterday, but was evidently determined to stick out the ‘last hours of bis official connection with the league. Before announcing the order of business be was presented. in bebialf of the republicans of ‘the state, with a gavel formed of twenty-nine different kinds of native woods. After ex- pressing his acknowledgment the official call was read by Secretary Humphreys, ‘The call of states developed the fact that thirty-eight states and territories were repre- ‘sented, and it was stated that the delegates | from three states that had failed to respond were in the city. In a humorous xpeech ex- Gov. F. A. Pritter of Arizona nominated him- self as a representative from that territory and the convention obliged him. President Clarkson on rising to deliver the nntial address was given a boistero us greet ing. PRESIDENT CLARKSON'S ADDRESS. As he advanced to the footlights the dele- gates rose to a man and cheered again and again, Twice he essayed to begin his annual address and as many times the applause forced him to stop. Quiet at inst restored, President Clarkson spoke as follows: ‘We meet here today in the name of the re- publicanism of Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses 5. Grant and James G. Binine. ‘This is the repub- licanism whose eternal word is human liberty, It isa republicanism that respects itself, loves the republic and its fellow-men, never ’ hauls down the American flag, reveres God, hates treason and tyranny, defends the weak and de- | spises ingratitude either in political parties or in nations, It isa fight of republicanism, and ail the world loves a man ora party that be- lieves enough in its own cause to fight for it. fhe first generation of republicant have made the nume of their party glorious in the greatness of things done for country and man- kind. Itis practically a new generation that musters here today as the republican party of the future. The day has come when we need the bugle power of blood and youth of the young men at the front of the party, The emocracy made up of old men never could defeat republicanism, but the danger we have to face now jemocratic party made up of young men.” [Prolonged applause. YOUNG MEN IN POLITICS. Mr. Clarkson quoted from a speech by the late J. G. Blaine in eulogy of young men in Politics, and then continued: “With the coming of the rule of the younger men let us hope that we shall have a party of greater courage in mal things and a larger tolerance in minor things “A majority of the voters of the United States are republicans on the real republican is- sues. The many voters have been alienated among strong elements by what might be called the intolerance of morality. Let us make the platform so broad that any man, native or foreign born, any man of any church, or of any occupation, may finda piace and a wel- come in our ranks. Thus we shall gain new votes and new clements, and we have the pleas- ure of giving welcome here today tor the first time toa delegation of fighting Republicans from the territory of Utah As we welcome them here today from a territory, #0 do we soon hope to welcome them from # state, “As we begin bere today the march of vie~ tory in 189%, we bave neither complaints nor apologies nor explanations to make for the defeat, ‘of the last year. Indeed, the republican party feels better today over the situation than the country itself. ARKAIGNING THE DEMOCRATS. “The democratic party, that saw in the repub- lican policies only robbery of the American people, has now been in power two monthe and the robbery still goes on by democratic consent and ander democratic auspices. We have had a democratic President aud a democratic Con- gress sixty daysand there are some results, Cleveland has done several things He has hauled down the flag where gallant Ben Harri- son and the republicans ran it up in the name of liberty on the Sandwich Islands, and more than that he gave to a confederate the first chance that any confederate ever bad to haul *Old Glory’ down. [Cheers.] “He and bis Secretary of the Treasury have already given the countrys plain foretaste of democratic ideas of finance and business; have already frightened the business world, practi- cally made a suspension of discount in all the banks of the country and created uneasiness and fear where yy and prosperity ruled before. “The new administration also has shown an adverse balance of foreign trade in the last four months of $50,000,000, as against a favor- able balance of over $70,000,000 in the first four months of the Harrson administrstion, [Renewed cheers. } “It is also about toachieve another great result in proposing to pay the pensions of the Union soldiers in due bills. Already are the democrats going at such a pace that it is plain toall honest men that the republicans in the present Congress will have to choose between allowing the democratic party to kill itself and protecting and saving the business interests of the country. And they will do it. STICKING TO OLD PRINCIPLES, ‘We go into this conflict to maintain our eld Principles with undiminished faith and fervoe, —— nS Continued om Nemth
