2 ME. BLOUNT REACHES HONOLULU. A Hearty Welcome Given by the Annexa- tien Ci The United States revenue cutter Rush ar- rived at Honolulu on March 29, nine days from San Francisco, having on board ex-Congress- man Blount of Georgia, who was appointed commussioner to investigate the existing con- dition in Hawaii and report as to the expedi- ency of the annexation of the islands to the United States. As soon as the cutter was sighted off Koko Head basiness men went to work and in a short time the streets and buildings were covered with flags and bunting. The townspeople turned out, and when the Rush anchored in javal Ray the docks aud streets were crowded. ‘steamer Australia, which was sched- uled to leave at noon, was held back, and from | her deck the band of the provisional govern- ment welcomed the new arrivals with strams of the “Star Spangled Banner.” WELCOMING THE COMMISSIONER, A delegation from the Annexation Club was hastily formed and welcomed the commissioner at the boat landing. A party of about seventy- five Hawaiian women from the Women Branch of the Hawaiian Patriotic League, bear- ing the American and Hawaiian flags, also pro- ceeded to the dock. The news that only one had been sent im that capacity to the islands soon spread to the shore and occasioned much surprise. Commissioner Blount declined to be inter- viewed, but from casual observation it would | seem that his labors may cover # period of | several weeks. The Rush will probably return to San Francisco in the meantime. Commis- sioner Blount did not leave the steamer for several hours and consequently a reception by the Hawaiinn League and the Annexation Club did not take place. The Rush brought dis- patches from Washington to Admiral Skerrett | and also the provisional government, but the nature of them could not be learned. | After the first feeling of surprise had passed away expressions of satisfaction at the arrival of the commissioner prevailed among the an- nexationists, ‘The provisional government is said to be in | receipt of dispatches stating that President Cleveland is favorable to the principle of annex- ation, and that Secretary Gresham favors it and | & prompt ratification of the treaty. The| Hawaiian Patriotic League, which seeks to con- tinue the autonomy of the country, is daily | more active, bat its members are all disposed to ceful methods, because they entertain the Peliet that the Washington government bas instructed the commissioner to ascertain the pular wish regarding annexation, and to | Frame bis report impartially in accordance with | his findings. The league, and it is stated the | queen aixo, are making great preparations to| _ Teceive the commissioner. Jobn F. Bush, ex-representative and editor of Ka Leeo. and Sir. Marsden.one of the Hawaiian commissioners to Washington, were on board the Australia. As soon as the steamer arrived within hailing distance of the dock Bush mounted the rigging and called out in the Hawaiian language: “No annexation yet. The has been tabled and a commission is coming down to findfiMMmt what you want and give vou rour rights. Cheers were given by a crowd of natives who lined the shore. Commissioner Marsden ap- peared hopeful of good results from the United | States commissioner's visit. Senate over the treaty he ascribed to the pres- sure of business consequent upon the outgoing of the late administration. If a new treaty was negotiated it would be on somewhat different lines from the one presented by President Har- Fison. Tv \V "The delay in the | WANTED—HELP. -. A THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. REY, 1521 i Mrs. Taylor Oliver of Morganfield, Ky., at 9 o'clock Tuesday night walked into Hoit's | drug store at Sturgis, fourteen miles from there, and covered Harry Delaney, a young drug clerk, with a revolver. She told him if | he did not marry her eighteen-year-old daugh- ter Abbie she would kill him. Delaney had several times during the last eight months been charged with having caused the downfall of the girl. but he always denied it Both parties sought legal advice, but no proceedings were had in court, Delaney ac- companied Mrs. Oliver outside to a carriage, in Which her husband and daughter were seated. | The four then drove to the county cierk’s office, | got a license and at 2:30 o'clock yesterday | morning Delaney and Mixs Oliver were married. The party then started to drive back to Sturgis. When at Teerhim, three miles from here, they were met by four men on horseback who demanded Delaney's release. They were refased and at once opened fire. As soon as the first shot was fired Delaney jumped out of | the carriage and ran to his friends. It is not known what Delaney said to them, but they | continued to discharge their firearm: ‘They shot the bride in the head, inflicting 2 wound from which she died at 5 o'clock. Mr. Oliver was shot in the face, body and arms. He died several hours later. ‘Hie wife escaped | with a wound in the fleshy part of her right arm. Mrs. Oliver, driving ber horse at break-neck speed, was pursued for a mile by the armed horsemen, and volley after volley was fired at She sought refuge at the first farm house She says she recognized George, mryand Frank Holt as three of the party who did the shooting. The men were arrested. | Icis said that George Deianey, a brother of Harry. was one of the horsemen. Both he and the bridegroom are missing. The Holt boys are cousius of the unwilling bridegroom. ‘The Olivers and Delaneys have been promi- nent in the county for years and the tragedy has caused a great deai of excitement. The people generally sympathize with the Olivers and there is some talk of lynching the men who did the «hooting. Mrs. Delaney, who was quite a beauty, is re- Ported to have given birth toa child just before abe died. THE STATE TO SELL LIQUOR. ew York Tribune from There will be no liquor or beer sold in South Carolina except by the | state after July 1. Four of the most eminent legal firms in the state yesterday decided the matter. Soon after the passage of the law at last session of the legislature the liquor dealers | of the state formed an association and em- Ployed counsel to test its constitutionality. ‘These counsel yesterday filed their opinion. They advise the liquor dealers to prepare to meet the law as valid and constitutional on and after July 1, and thatin view of the heavy pen- alties preseribed by the act they cannot advise them to continue selling liquor after July 1, but on the contrary advise them to comply with the statute until it bas been declared in- valid. To test the coustitutionality of the statute on the point of federal prohibition of dis- crimination the counsel advise that proper pro- | ceedings be taken. ‘The news was a great surprise and its effect fn a business point of view will be serious. In the meantime the governor of the state, to- gether with the state dispenser, is traveling in the west and north maxing arrangements to open the state bar rooms on July L ——+e- Outrages of Mexican Brigands. Aspecial tothe New York Times from the City of Mexico says: ‘The band of brigands who have been operat- | ing i the vicinity of Jalatleo have committed | another daring outrage. Three young meu were passing along the public highway. when the bandits, under the leadership of Juan Ranon Guerrero, made a sudden attack upon them. ‘The three travelers stood their ground bravely aad returned the fire of the robbers. ‘The bat- tle lasted several minutes and resulted in two f the bandits being killed. Two vf the trav- elers were killed and the other one seriously | Wounded. After robbing the bodies the bri- gands started for their rendezvous in the mountains, but were overtaken by a detach- ment of rural troops. Another decperate Sght fight occurred, in which two more of were killed and two wounded. Three po tured and the remaining ten escaped te the mountains.
