2 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. FRIDAY, 17, 1893—TEN PAGES. NEWS FEKOM FREDERICK. come to Wheelmen, and Other Matters, Farpenicx, Mp.. March 16, 1893. Correspondence of The Evening Star. ‘The committee of arrangements for the fire- | men’s demonstration to be held in this city on | June 7 and § in honor of the seventy- —_ anniversary of the Independent Hose C Of Frederick announce that already fifty-three fire associations in Pennsylvania. New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, New York and the District of Columbia have positively accepted invitations to be present. and many of them have sent committees to Frederick to ar- range for the accommodation of their men. ‘The Veteran Volunteer Firemen of Washington have decided to come and the Columbia Fire Company, No. 4, of Alexandria. The first day will be devoted to the reception of the visiting firemen and a parade and luncheon. The second day prize contests will take place and a state firemen’s association will be organized. William Hartsock, Charles Six and William . Burek, three your men of this city, ali under age, were arrested yesterday at the instance of States Attorney Edward S. Eichelberger, charged with an assault upon fonrteen-vear-old Minnie Phebus, who lives on West South street, this city. Brooke J. Jamison, a prominent resident of Walkerville, this county, hax entered suit in the cireuit court ere against Clayton H. Stauffer, a merchant of Walkerville, for $5,000 damages for slander. ‘The trouble which ied to the suit grew out of a recent borough election in Walkerville. married at Concordia Latheran Church in Washington. D. last week, returned to Frederick Monday and were tendered a fine re- | ception that eveuing at their home. No. 25 West 2d street. The rooms were beautifully deco- | rated and brilliantly illuminated. snd many called daring the evening to tender congratu- | © lations. The happy couple stood in the parlor beneath a large oral bell and were assisted in receiving by Mise Powell of this county Mr. Henry Wineberg of this city. Mrs. Railing wore white silk with court train, diamond orna- ments. TO TAX TELEORAPH POLES. The recent decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in the case of the city of St. | Louis justifving the action of the citr councils in taxing telegraph and telephone poles has been regarded with special interest here, und last night a bill was im:rodnced at the monthly session of the board of aldermen relating to the taxation of poles in Frederick. The matter | wil be farther discussed and considered by the board before final action is taken, but it is the general belief that the decision of the Supreme Court applies as well to Frederick as it does to | St. Louis. Efforts were made here several years ago to pass a bill imposing municipal ‘taxes upon telegraph and telephone companies for poies and wires, but it failed of pascage at the time, not having the backing of « Supreme Court opimion. BUILDING ACTIVITY. ‘The outlook for a building boom in Frederick during the coming spring and summer is very bright, and a number of new residences will be | erected and old ones improved. Since the | passage of an ordinance by the corporatic authorities providing for the issuance of build- ing permits the city registrar has granted | eighteen of these, and the demand is now be- coming very actire. The location of snece: ful new industries here bax materially added to the populstion, and in consequence the ¢ mand for comfortable dwellings is now than ever before. ‘The Frederick Bieycle Club. of which Mr. W. T. Delap'aine is president, has recently taken action relative to procuring a suitable buxiding for acinb house, in order to be prepared to properly entertain visiting wheelmen trom Bal- timore and Washingt large numbers of whom ass through bere during the wheeling sexson. The membership of the ¢.ub is rapidiy increas- ing. and the first event of the season under their ausnices will bea bundicap nce in June, the course to be from Frederick to Wood, and back, an agg: e distance of twe! miles over a fine ise.
