The President today refused to interfere in the Schneider case even to the extent of grant- ing a brief respite. | Tho ministers who bave interested them- selves in the case of Howard Schneider did not let up today in their efforts to secure at least a brief reprieve for the condemned man. Late vesterday afternoon Rev. Dr. Parson and Rev. Dr. Domer called upon Mr. Cleveland and urged that Schneider be given more time in which to prepare for his end. The President said that if Dr. Parson would pledge his honor that Schneider had not had suffic time he would consider the advisabi ing him a few days more. This Dr. Parson did not feel aliogether willing to do. It was believed, however, that the President had held out some slight thread of hope and the preacher went over to Baltimore last night. DR. PARSON AND DR. DORMER. It was not long after 9 o'clock this morning when Dr. Parson and Dr. Domer of the They were shown into the President's room almost immediately and remained in the neigh- borhood of aquarter of an hour. What the result of their appeal was could not be learned at the White House, but it cértainly was not in the nature of a favorable answer. . PRIVATE SECRETARY THURBER SECRETIVE. Curiously enough an effort has been made at the White House to prevent anything about the case from leaking out today. After the min- isters’ early call Mr.. Thurber, the President's private secretary, was asked by several news- paper men whether or not Mr. Cleveland had done anything in the Schneider case. To each and every such question the answer was that Mr. Thurber was not at liberty to may anything at all, and be must refer ai to Schneider be able to answer “the questions, but he had been enjoined to silence and his lips were sealed. He refused to say anything at ail and repeated questionings could elicit nothing further from him. Later in the afternoon, however, it was learned that the President bad told the two mumisters this morning that he must decline to interfere in any way. He told Dr. Parson that if there was anything new and of importance he would give him an audience at any time. Dr. Parson then went at once to the jail with Dr. Godding and Dr. Rosse. DR. PARSON AGAIN INTERCEDES. He returned to the White House at 1:45 o'clock, but at that time the President was at lunch and could not see him jast then. Dr. Parson was more than ever satisfied after the medical examination by the physicians that Schneider was a mental wreck. He told a Stan reporter at the White House that while President Cleveland had heid outnohope atailof executive clemency yet he thought there was still a chance. At the afternoon conference with the President Dr. Parson handed him a carefully prepared paper that set forth at some length the reasons wy a respite should be granted. WHY ME 18 SO URGENT. Dr. Parson told the reporter that he would not turn a hand to obtain a commutation of Schneider's sentence or to secure him a single hour's reprieve were he not satisfied that the man was insane, for the nature of Schneider's crime was such as to merit punishment of a capi tal nature if the man wasresponsible for his act, He urged upon the President in the second interview the desirability of granting a reason- able reprieve in order that Schneider might ve confined in the hospital for the insane, where it could soon be determined whether or not he was malingering. In case he was decided rane the sentence which had been suspended for the time could be carried into effect. It was very evident, however, that even Dr. Parson, who has been ‘so indefatigable in his efforts in behalf of the condemned man had practically no hope that his labors would be Successful. SECRETARY GRESHAM'S INTEREST. The fact developed late this afternoon that Secretary Gresham's call upon Mr. Cleveland this morning was in connection with the Schneider case. Mr. A. W. lawyer from Indiangpolis, @ friend ‘of Mr. Gresham's and a relative ‘of the Schneider family, cailed upon the Secretary of State thi morning to learn the exact status of the ap- peal for clemeney. ‘This Mr. Gresham could not give without secing the Presi- dent and his call at the White House was for the | purpose of rtaining, not of interfermg. It is possible that Mr. Wiltshire may have an inte=view with the President late this afternoon or evening. MRS. PRATT TELLS OF HER INTERVIEW. Notwithstanding the assertion credited to Warden Burke that Howard Schneider showed no feeling when one of the members of the Union Mission prayed with him at the jail yes- terday the opinion of Lizzie C. Pratt, who was at the head of the Beth@sda Park branch of the Union Mission, differs with him. Mrs. Pratt is the lady who yesterday persuaded Schneider to allow her to pray with him. ‘Mrs. Pratt eaid to a Stax reporter today that she had made many attempts to secure Schnei. der's attention, but he had always repulsed her. Yesterday, however, she renewed her efforts and wrote him which read as follows: “Will Mr. Schneider allow me to see him for but five minutes? {Signed} From a Mother.
