There was no doubt about his | guilt and Judge Miller, in order to make the | punishment fit the offense, made some inquiries | concerning the nature of the theft. Its work showed an increase in the Unity of action of the members that was grati- fying and resulted in an effect that would do credit to some of the most ambitious profes- sional organizations. The work of the strings is to be particularly commended. Miss Scumpr’s Lectcre.—Carroll Institute Hail beld an audience of fair proportions last evening to listen to Mies Anna Sei ton Schmidt's interesting lecture, “Paris and the French Commune.” The thrill ing incidents of the bloody commune were told in an interesting way and the excel- lent stereoptican views heightened the effect. ‘Miss Schmidt has devoted a great deal of time and money to the study of the enbject and dis- played a knowledge of the intricate details of the revolution thxt added considerable to the enjoyment of the lecture. Thursday evening, March 2, Miss Schmidt will deliver the remain- ing lecture of the course, “Paris and Napo- leon I.” Tae Harper Lecrures.—Robarts Harper occupies the same place in Engiand that John L. Stoddard does in America, and this season during Mr. Stoddard’s absence abroad is mak- ing a tour of America and winning universal favor. Judge Cox yesterday signed the decree in the Rochdale case. The text of the decree 1s pub- lished elsewhere in Tax Stan today. The in- corporated company is enjoined from using the name “Rochdale” and is required to hand over to the voluntary society all the moneys, books and papers and to pay all the costs of the suit. Mr. Harsha’s claim for office rent, amountin; to $1,200, was disallowed. The money had been paid over and execution for the costs will issue tomorrow. ess Divorce Matters. A bill for a divorce was filed by Mamie Beatty agt. James Beatty,to whom she was married | in 1886 at Matoon, Ill, on the ground of bad | treatment, assaulting her, &c. Yesterday a decree of divorce was made in the case of Francis Leonard agt. Hannah Leonard, on the ground of cruel treatment, with the payment of $35 per month to defend- ant and the support of the children, Sadden Death of a Treasury Messenger. Townley Brown of 1522 L street northwest died suddenly in Wagner's stable, between I, K, 19th and 20th streets northwest, of heart failure. ‘The deceased was a messenger in the Treasury Department. —_ ‘The Cattle Market. At the cattle market at the Washington Union stock yard at Benning, D. GEORGETOWN. A SAD CASE OF DISTRESS. Mrs. Wm. Russell, who died on a canal boat day before yesterday, primarily through want of care and nourishment, was buried yesterday in Virginia, several Georgetown gentlemen fur- nishing a coffin and conveyance. The husband, | who is sick and out of work, and the children, who are small and unable to take care of them- selves, are greatly in need of the help of th charitable. Through Rev. George Howell of Grace Church their wants during the last day or two have been attended to, but the unfor- tunate family are in need of many things to make their existence bearable. RAILROAD EXGINEERS SURVEYING. Two corps of engineers are at work on this side of Cumberland running lines for the ex- tension of the West Virginia Central railroad, which will span the Potomac river and Chesa- ake and Ohio canal by « sixty-foot steel ridge, near what is known as Patterson’ Creek depot. The Baltimore and Ohio road is alsosurveying in that neighborhood for the pur- pose of running anew track to assist in the tting of freight to their Cumberland yards. e work of construction will begin on or about April 1, a number of Georgetown Inbor- ers having been engaged to report to the con- struction superintendent on that day.
