MINOR POLICE COURT CASES. Prisoners That Were Before Judge Kim- ball This Morning. William Engelbright, a neatly and comfort ably dressed elderly man, was a prisoner in the Police Court this morning. His home is in Martinsburg, W. Va.,and be has relatives in this city. Lastevening he went out from his mster’shouse and wanting go return to his home he started to beg a fow nickels, as he said he wanted to get about 60 or 70 cents without asking his relatives for it. Hewas not under the influence of Mquor and had done nothing but asked for a few nickels, and for that Police- man Kemp arrested him. “I only wanted to get 60 of 70 cents,” said the unfortunate man to the court, “as I Wanted to return home.” “You can't beg on the streets in this city,” ‘said the court. Preparations Made to Entertain the Dele- gates When They Come Here. ‘The delegates to the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church, which meets here in May next, will be givens hearty reception by the citizens of this city. In order that arrange- ments may be perfected for the reception and entertainment of the delegntes an early begin- ning bas been made. The general plan has been under consideration by Rev. Dr. Bartlett, the pastor of the New York Avenue Church, and the officers of that church for some time. As the meetings of the assembly will be held in that church the initiative naturally fell upon the pastor and the officers of the church. In response to a circular issued by Dr. Bartlett the pastors of the Presbyterian churches of the city ‘and representatives from the sessions of the churches met last evening in the lecture room of the New York Avenue Church. Dr. Bartlett Pfenided and stated the object of the meeting. pon his suggestion Mr. J. W. Thompson was chosen treasurer of the committee of arrange- mente and Mr. John B. Acapemy oF Mustc.—Last night Miss Julia Marlowe was seen in the character of Beatrice in Shakespeare's “Much Ado About Nothing” and she charmed a large audience by her excel- lent comedy acting. She caught the spirit of the part aud brought out all the brilliancy of the great dramatist’s lines with telling effect. ‘Miss Marlowe was well supported and there were two Washingtonians in the cast who d serve especial mention. Mr. Giles Shine developed into one of the best Shakesperian comedians that the stage now holds. If the hundred more or less gilded youths who visited the French ball last night did so with the anticipation of witnessing a miniature “Black Crook” or a fin de siecle “Night Of" they were more disappointed than if they had awakened this morning without feeling the de- sire uppermost in their minds to push the but- ton and call for @ potassium cyanide cocktail and a bowl of cracked ice very icy. In fact the much-advertised affair was a failure from the standpomt of those who looked for some- thing risque.
