Lust night at the National Theater Mr. Sothern fo with hi was seen in his latest euccess, “Captain Lettar- blair,” 4 character totally at variaace with | those in which he had heretofore appeared, and | it demonstrated the great versatility of this ex cellent actor. ‘The bero is an Irishman with all | the mercurial qualities of the race. and Mr. Sothern brings out all his strength, all bis humor, all his weakness. The dialogue is full of brightness and there is hardly a dull line in it, but the play is more of a one-part affair than ny of Mr. Sothern’s previous efforts. It was evidently written for Mr. Sothern and intended togive him the fullest scope. As an artistically constructed drama it is far below either of the plays with which Mr. Sothern has been associ- ated, but as a popular success it will probably Jewd ‘them all, Mr. Sothern's reception last night was enthusiastic and his work, barring that in the first act where he rather overacted, was eminently satisfactory.
