Corer 1x Torgex. P. Thompron, in a dispatch from Constanti- nople to the Department of State, incloses a report on the present condition of cholera in the ‘Turkish empire by Dr. Zavitziano. This report states that cholera still exists at Tre- Bizonde and also in Hungaria. Nearly every @ay one or two cases of cholera attacks are reg- istered. Since the appearance of cholera on October 30 last up to January 10, 1893, there have beon registered 262 deaths from cholera. rumaiaria Wonrp's Farn Voucners.—The Secretary of the Treasury has addressed a letter to the chair- man of the board of management, U.S. gov- ernment exhibits, world’s Columbian exposi- tion, requesting that all vouchers transmitted to the Treasury Department for settlement con- tain a statement setting forth what use is to be made of the articles purchased. together with such additional information as will show to any ‘one not familiar with the work of the board the necessity for such expenditures. Heretofore it has been the practice of the board to submit | vouchers for settlement upon the bare state- ment that the purchases are to be used in con- nection with a certain exhibit. This, the Sec- thinks, is not sufficient, as every voucher should show on ite face such information as will be a complete explanation of the necessity and character of the expenditure. —_— Pensoxat.—James P. Mr, McLean's Check for Nearly $300,000 Given Today. | SOME OF TRE DETAILS OF THR RAILROAD DFAL BECOME PUBLIC—TALK STILL ABOUT A COM- BINATION THAT WILL INCLUDE THE METRO- POLITAN AND COLUMBIA ROADS. This morning a certified check on Riggs & Co., signed by Mr. John R. MeLean and call- ing for the payment of $275,165, was deposited |in the National Bank of the Republic. this sum 5,003 shares of stock of the Belt Line Street Railroad Company were transferred by some forty stockholders to Mr. McLean. The cashier of the bank during the day made out checks in payment of the stock as it was transferred, and before the close of business the transaction was completed and the control of the road had changed hands. As stated in yesterday's Stan, the trans- action was closed yesterday afternoon, The details, however, were completed today. The price paid for the stock was the ame to all the stockholders who had given options on their boldings—namely, #53 per share. While vir- tually the control of the road has been changed, yet practically the old management will continue, it ix 1 tood, for a month, when the representatives of the new interest | ill be given places on the board ot directors, Exactly who will be in active control is not known and probably will not be known until the change is made. It ix stated on good authority that the control of this property will not remain in this city, but thet it will nearly all go to capitalists living elsewhere. TALK OF A STRONG RAILROAD COMBINATION. It is further stated that this purchase is only @ part of the plan for creating a strong street railroad system. It is. not known, of course, positively what progress has been made in acquiring the control of the Metropol- itan and the mbin railroads, but it is_believed that in the course « few | sufticient progress will have been accomplished | so that a definite announcement can be mad he negotiation throughout bas been coi ducted “with a degree of secrecy that is unusual in a deal of such a character, involving as it does the necessity of sucha large number of people preserving ‘confidence. In the case of the Belt road deal an option on their holdings was obtained from no less than forty different stockholders, and no doubt others were approached who for one reason and another refused to sign the option This option was good for twenty dara, and, a bus already been stated in Tue Stan, was not finally decided to take it np until the last day. So for twenty days the deal has been known to forty people and more. But | it was not until the publication in Tur Stan taro days ago that there was any knowledge of such a transaction outside of the lin circle named. The stockholders themselves, apart from the fact that an offer had been made for their stock, had no information as to who was the purchaser or whom he rep- resented. there is not today probably more then two or three men in this city that have in- side information as to this deal. HOW THE TRANSFER WAS MADE. ‘The work of securing the options on the Belt stock was intrusted to Mr. William A. Mearns, | the representative of the banking house of Corson & Macartne; and was very successfully performed. The entire number of stockholders who parted with thei stock was about forty. Some of the large holders are George FE. Lemon, H. A. Willar: |W. B. Gurley, C. J. Bell, George White, | Charles Flint, Jeremiah Rusk and J. W. Barnes. As the case stands today Mr. McLean holds his individual name the controlling interest in this road, and of course there is no doubt of bis financial ability to continue to bold such an in- terest if he so chooses or to buy the | balance of the stock and one or two more roads in the bargain. Financially Mr, McLean is qniteequal to such an undertaking if he saw fit. What is more, be has such confidence | in the future of this city that an investment of | such magnitude would meet the approval of his judgment. In fact, this was the tenor of the | conversation a Stan reporter had with Mr. McLean this morning. Mr. McLean said that be had bought the road becanse he thought it 8 a good thing todo. He considered that | this city was still in its infancy in regard to enter; rises of this cheracter, and he believet that the road was a good property now, and in hie opinion would be still better in the fature. When asked if he intended to keep the stock asa whole and in his own name he said that of course if he was offered a good price for it he would sell this stock just as he would sell any- thing else that he owned and thonght it wise to nell. to the Belt road becoming a part of » tem of street railroads in this city, Mr. McLean was inclined to laugh at the idea. AN OUISIDE SYNDICATE SAID TO BE INTERESTED, However, the best informed mon are of the irchase is in the from the city, | | opinion that the Belt road y | interest of some syndicate the probabilities pointing to the great aynd cate that is 0 largely interested in street rail | roads in other places as being the one that is mont likely to be back of this deal as well as of the others which have been referred too. Beyond the fact that options have already, in ali probability, been secured on the stock of the Metropolitan and of the Columbia | railroads nothing is known of what is being done in this direction. If such options are held it has not transpired as yet who holds | them. The negotiations, if any have been con- | ducted, are still kept a profound secret, It is significant fact that some of the large holders of Metropolitan stock are not talking very much just now, which leads to the suspicion on the part of some that there is a deal going on. shores COULD NAME THEM, BUT WOULDN'T. Ex-Gov. Campbell Thinks He Knows Who Will Go Into the Cabinet. Ex-Gov. Campbell of Ohio paid a flying visit to Washington yesterday, remaining here but a few hours. To Tue Stas representative be said: “Politics has nothing to do with my presence in Washington. In fact, I am out of politics. I don't wish political office; I'm going to attend to business and make some money just for the novelty of the thing. If I've been ‘mentioned’ for a cabinet position or any other office within the gift of Mr. Cleveland Iam unaware of it, and if I'm going to attend to my pri- vate affairs how can I hold office? I have had a recent consultation with Mr. | Cleveland and think Iean name several of the cabinet officers. Will I do so, please?
