The school was organized April 15, 1862, as | the “Calvary Baptist Mission School.” ‘The sessions were held Sunday afternoons at first in Franklin Hall, 9th and D streets; then in Tem- perance Hall on E street, and still later in the Columbia law building on Sth street, Calvary | Church at that time occupying the building as apince of worship. On January 29, 1863, the | present organization was effected and the hou: of service changed to 9:30 in the morning. | June 3, 1866, church building erected on the present site of | Calvary Church. This building was de- stroved by fire December 15, 1867. The addition to the medical department of the Howard University, located in Freedman’s Hospital, was formally opened last night by exercises held in the anatomical demonstrating room of the new building. About the room were a number of students and their Indies, as well as the entire medical faculty, consisting of Prof. Charles P. Purvis, Prof. Neil F. Graham, Daniel S. Lamb, Wm. 8. Seaman, John E. In the opening address delivered by Prof. Hood hg spoke of the successful growth of the college from a very small position to one of prominence among the educational institutions of the capital. The college had kept up well with the times and in some instances had made the lead for other institutions to follow, in that it had been the first to admit women and the first to introduce the three years’ course. Gen. George W. Balloch of the board of trustees also spoke on the same line. Dre. Reyburn, Purvis, and Brumbaugh, Mr. Frederick Dougiass and Dr. Beverly Hall, one of the first graduates of the medical department of the college, made remarks. At the conelusion of the exercises those pres- ent enjoyed a banquet, which was served in the microscopical laboratory.
