Carlisle's visit to Mr, Cleveland is for the purpose of talking over with bim the condition ‘of the treasury. Before leaving Washington |he made a careful examination of the ro- | port of Secretary Foster to the ways and | means committee. Mr. Cleveland does | not think that there is anything in the con- | dition of the treasury that is alarming, nor that there is any necessity at this time for legis- 13 | lation on the subject. Mr. Carlisle agrees with | have been 16 him on this subject, but it was deemed desir- | ernment has been established and X | abie that they should go over Secretary Foster what the situation is, Mr. Cleveland is still pressing for the repeal of the law for the purchase of miver, and that | 4s a subject the two men will confer on. Mr. crats in the Senate who will vote for it to secure | the repeal if a vote is not prevented by filibus- tering on the part of the silver men. Mr. Wall, the democratic national commit teeman of Wisconsin, who has just come from | a visit to Mr. Cleveland and who has been re- | ferred to as a cabinet possibility, has Been about the Capitol today talking with) members about the silver repeal. Cleveland seems never to lose an opportantty to impress upon his visitors his conviction that the purchase of | silver should be stopped by this Congress, and many of those who are anxious to please him undertake to do some work in Congress. The late day fixed for the consideration of the subject in the House—the 9th and 10th of | February—is liable to lessen the chances of ultimate action, ‘The committeo on rules was holding open a time next week to be assigned to the banking committee, but thoxe who are pressing the Andrew bill named the dates above as the ones they wanted, and that order was agreed to. The silver men made no opposition to a special order at any time the banking committee desired, and the agreement was amicable. MR. WANAMAKER’S ‘VITATIONS. He Asked All to His Reception From Chief Clerk to Charwomen, Postmaster General Wanamaker had invite tions out for a reception at his residence on Ofice Department. These have been recalled on account of the death of Mr. Biaine and the reception will not take place. Perhaps no act in his official career has excited more comment | among the people associated with him in the department than these cards of invitation. ‘There were numerous conferences and a great ado when it was found that the hospitality of the Postmaster General on this occasion ineluded every one whose name was borne on the rolls of the department. With a democ- racy that was not at all to the fancy of « large number of the employes Mr. Wanamaker had invited to his home the women who are employed in cleaning and in sweeping the rooms, the memengers who sit at the doors of the higher officials and who run errands, and, in fact, every one, without regard to sex or color or previous condition of servitude. As the invitation included the wives of the employes it was looked upon as a social rather than an official affair. Some of the Indies declared in their indignation that they wouid not go: others were in a painful state of uncertainty as to what course to pur- sue. Some were rather dubious of the wisdom of the policy of declining an invitation coming from such a source and this postponement or entire abandonment of the reception is con- sidered to be a happy solation of the perplex- ing problem. If the reception bad actually taken place it would have proved, it is thought, the moet notable in the list of the social events of the present season. co —. Mr. Partridge Confirmed.
