‘THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. THE EVENING STAR basa regular and permasest circelation t= Wasbington three times larger thas that of any other paper ia the city. Ae a local NEWS paper and Ad~ vertising Wodiam it has ne competitor. Live ettizens will watch with more than ordi- nary interest the procedure of the Penneyl- vania and Reading Railroad Companies as to the program of non-unionizing their employes ‘which seems to have been agreed upon by the authorities. To aay that the men are surprised but feebly expresses their condition. For some months past it has been evident that railroad trainmen upon one or two of the great systems were getting ready to demand increased com- pensation and the master minds had shrewdly Gecided that the effort would be more effective if pat forth when the world’s fair traffic was about to commence. But there wes no discontent among the Pennsylvania's employes and only in case of a sympathetic strike being ordered would the lines of that company be blocked. It was therefore » bomb- sbell which fell at Indianapolis when the Penn- syivania’s freigh'-bandlers were given the choice between severing connection with their anion or leaving the road. Ten out of twenty-three decried to stand by the organization which they believed bad « right to exist, the others re- ained their situations. Then it was stated that the same company bad heen quietly dispensing with the services of operators who belonged to the Order of Railroad Telegraphers and filling the vacancies with men who had no labor aMiliations. If these discharges mean that the company will employ only those who are not members of the two or three organizations which now hare on their rolls nine-tenths of the Penneyivauia’s brain and brawn then there will indeed be trouble. Rumors ofa decidedly substantial nature hare it that the Reading authorities are about to move in the same direction and if these prove tras the difi- culty mast assume dangerous proportions. It would vem as though the railroad corporations, te aroid « conflict and heary Snancial los during the world’s fair rush, prefer to have the fight settled before the tremendous stream of travel starts westward. But no one can quite understand the Pennsylvania Company sbould take the initiative. Washington is per- sonally interested in this matter and it sincerely hopes that whatever sparring the company and ite employes may indulge in will be concluded before the inaugural period commences. soe Demeeratic Senators do not seem to be dis- turbed at the prospect of welcoming to their sedate brotherhood that eminent Tammanyite who made up his mind to succeed Senator His- cock and who has practically succeeded—Mr. Edward Murphy. But the calmness with which the coming of this stellar surprise is being re- ceived is deceptive, for away beneath the sur- face and in the hearts of Cleveland's most intimate friends there are flutterings that will not be subdued. Every politician knows that Marpby will in all cases follow the leadings of David B. Hill, and as that eminent wirepuller is not an ardent admirer of Grover Cleveland, there are thore who imagine that the Hill- Murphy team will speedily put itself on record as antradministration in its tendencies. Such & proceeding is most unlikely. Senator Hill is too shrewd to be openly antagonistic to the purveyor general of offices until he can put the purveyor general in a disagreeable and politically disereditable attitude. So long as President Cleveland nominates only solid dem- ‘crate neither Senator Hill nor Senator Murphy will utter a chirp, but the instant the head of a mugwump nominee appears in executive ses- ton at least two men will hit it while several others, who just now are willing tu be classified ‘with those who adore Cleveland, will applaud the effort and if necestary assist in removing the mutilated snbject from the senatorial pres ence. It will be very easy for the New Yorkers to explain their action. They will stand firmly and conspicuously upon the Tammany plat- form and when the opportunity arrives may be expected to bound on the stage from op- posite wings, simultaneously seatter sand im the center, bow to the audienge, link ¢ibows, and after singing in unison “We are democrats” proceed to dance vigorously upon the prostrate President and his mugwump nominee. That isthe program. If Mr. Cleve- Jand smiles upon recent converts to the doc- trines of democracy then he and they will be sufferers; if he does not then none but the mugs ill have cause for grief. ree In the decease of Benjamin F. Butler the United States loses a citizen whose name the | world over was regarded as being the synonym for Yankee shrewdness and amazing legal en- terprise. That Gen. Butler was in many re- epects a great man cannot be doubted. With- out previous military experience he was a more | than tolerably successful soldier, but be will more generally be remembered as alawyer whose | well of resources was never dry and whose tenacity in any cause in which he was inter. ested was truly wonderfal. He had as many ‘exemies as any other human being of this gen- eration, bat his prosperity was continuoas and on the abuse of opponents he seemed to fatten. —— Senator Kenna’s death will bring to the sur- face memories of the many kindly acts by which be endeared himself to all who bad the privilege of being associated with him. Fear- Jess asa debater and warm in his support of what he believed to be the right, no matter how wenk the cause, he achieved popularity euch as but few public men possess, see Baltimoreans want to know why it is sinful to skate in Droid Hill Park on Sunday when row- ing on the same lakes is not prohibited in sum- mer time. Washingtonians want to know why 0 many people live in Baltimore anyhow when there is such a desirable city as this within The Senate ought to take prompt and favor- able action in the matter of providing the Nor- folk and Western with the proposed indepen- dent entrance ito the District. There is no Project pending of greater importance to the development and welfare of the new Washing- ton. oe Only the enemies of a republican form of Government can view with unconcern the struggle which threatens to dethrone the reason of that old-time ally of the United States—the land that loaned us Lafayette and furnished uch other material aid when aid was most Reedet —— The public, the confiding public which make: investments on the strength of other ‘men's good reputations, would be much inter- ‘evted ia knowing to what extent the unautbor- ived ase of prominent ames, as in the case of Mr. McComas, is being carried. a Washingtonians will hear with astonishment that « railroad company has purchased a depot site in York, Pa. Has York no public reserva- tions? ee A German savant has discovered what he thinks is a sare means of disinfecting rivers. ‘There are fears that Rock creek will be a steady eusto cr. - zee If conditions get so lively that agitations eceur in Congrese and Kansas simultaneously Jerry Simpson will have to provide himself ‘With an astral body. see ‘There are apprehensions that the present fiush of excitement in France may becomes royal fush. —— There are symptoms of « hope in Chicago that the foot pads and the police will succeed in wiping each other out ee Few men have bad hatred as bitter or admi- ation as ardent as Benjamin Butler had, - 0 ‘This winter evinces disposition to make veminiscent oldest inhabitants work over-time, Wouex As Srrcoratons. She has been subdued When the Strongest arm ruled then. perhaps, was woman in- fertor, but now that t @ world is beginning to be ruled with the strongest and best minds she is corfimanding more recognition, In the col- jeges in England we Quad her beating the men. Of course there are foolish women, 9s there are foolish mea, but we cannot disprove » rule by the exception to that rule. Women have little opportunity fer epseuiation or investment, butenerally take every advantage of thetr Itmnited opportunities. Thiscan be weil illus trated in the purchase of clothing of sll kinds. The | an Who hase shrewd wife issupplied at nearly balf the catlay made by the man without one. Just now. for instance, women are spectlating, or perhaps (n- testing would be the better word.in winter garments. Merchants are closing out at prices that assure at least ‘percent tnierest on the money invested, as the fol’owine list wtil testify: $1.10 forchotce of any of the following winter ‘underrarments for men's wear: Cartwright & War- her's, American Hostery Co.'s. Genuine Camel's Hair, Natural Wool or “Health” Underwear None of these warments sold at less than $1.50 and some, Cart- wright & Warner's, were $1.50. Of course these are ‘unusually «reat recuctions in prices and it is only be- cause the proprietor of the Palats Royal does not in: tend to carry ® piece of winter goodsto the new build- ing on G street.
