SHUTTING THE GATES, A Committes,of Senators Discussing Immigration. ACQUITTED OF KILLING HER HUSBAND. | Another Rise in the Cotton Mar- ket. INTEREST IN THE BRIGGS CASE RESTRICTING IMMIGRATION. ‘Trans-Atlantic Steamship Companies Watch- ing the Senate Committee's Deliberations, ‘ew York, Nov. 30.—The U. 8. Senate im- migration committee continued its sessions to- day at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, Senators Chand ler, Faulkner, Gray, Hale and Hiscock attend- ing. As before, the hearing was secret. The subject of the cholera brought to this port by immigrants was taken up, Col. Weber..commie- ioner of emigration, being examined. ‘The steamship companies which bring imini- grants to this port have been watching with in- terest the deliberations of the committee. Its} action yest in considering the proposition | tosuspend immigration for one year from March 1, 1893, was discussed at all the steamship offices today, and the agents gen- erally predicted disaster ns a sure consequence of such u move. Even the agitation «f the | question, the steamship men say, hus bad a bad | effect on busines | Cortis, manager of the Hamburg-Amer- ican Packet Company, said: “If immigration is suspended for a year we will simply land our immigrant passengers in Canada. The Cana- dians will profit by euch legislation, Their | railroads will get the busines which now goes to American roads, Of course the steamship — companies will suffer by the change, but they do not propose to give up their business in caxe Congress tries to stop immigration for a time. A few ships y be used for bringing freight to and from this port, but they would have tobe run at a loss if ‘they could not carry immigrants, It is impossible to stop immigration to this country. Onr ports may be guarded, but who can prevent immigrants from landing in Canada ‘crossing the border? The total result of Senator Chandler's proposed bill would be not | to stop immigration but to transfer the landing places from this country to Canada.” —— E TOO GREAT, At Least That Is What the Jury Thought, and Acquitted Mrs. DeLong of Murder.
