Tr THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. ¢. a! = SATURDAY, » Seed & 26, THE EVE WASHINGTON. SATURDAY. vember 26, 1892. =—=——— — CROSBY 8. NOTES Editor. THE EVEN s has = lar and sermanent cinceiniien In Washington three times larger than that of any other paper in the city. Ae a local NEWS paper and Ad- vertiaing Medium it has ne competitor. ———— Serious interruptions of traffic on the cable reed, extremely annoying to the public and the cause of considerable financial loss to the com- pany, direct more than 4 little attention to the fact that street car facilities in Washington are unsatisfactory. They have improved materially within the past three or four years, and the construction of the expensive cable road is the most notable of the advances made, but mach still remains to be accomplished. In many re- pects America is very far in advance of all national competitors, but in the matter of safe and satisfactory rapid transit it is decidedly in the rear. ‘This condition of affairs is due principally to corporate greed. American capitalists, particularly those of the smaller sort, are averse to putting their cash into any enterprise that cannot promise « return considerably larger and more gratify- ing than is needed to satisfy the European who has money available for investment. Amer- ican capital now controle what is un- doubtedly the cheapest, most dangerous and most profitable street car motor, known popularly and unpopulariy as the trolley system. The ideal motor is one which equips each car independently as in the storage battery and compressed air systems. The best practical motor of this type wonld long ago hrve been developed and utilized by American ingenuity had not co many of the wealthier street railroad men been directly inter- ested in the trolley idea and ite resultant profit. A street railroad system in which all the cars are dependent upon the caprices of a single motor—great as the advance is over borse cars—is considerably short of the ideal. For two years this com- munity has been waiting with wonder- fal patience for the storage battery cars promised by the Metropolitan Company. From official sources comes the statement that mechan- iam of the highest type has been harnessed to cheaply produced electric force, and that within & brief period the P-street line will be thor- oughly equipped with such combinations. If this announcement be true, and there is no reason why any one ehoald suppote it to be otherwise, then the problem of street-car propulsion has been solved. It is to be hoped, however, that these storage cars will be constructed more with the public mfort in view than were the vehicles they are to supplant. A good example on this phase of the question has | been set by the Belt company. For a longtime } that corporation was content to run the pcorest and most uncomfortable conveyances over | ite valuable route. and although the road touched at many important business points it was only patronized by people who were com- pelled to useit. Now the Belt cars are models of beauty and comfort, and when the company finds that motor it is looking for it will have more business than it can easily attend to. Whether short-sighted managers see it or n>t it pays to accommodate the public. or. ooo Social St. Louis, by which is meant that por- tion of the St. Louis population devoted to “society,” is much disturbed, end with reason. The Daughters of the Confederacy, whoever they may be, are going to delight fashionable lovers of terpsichore by giving grand ball, and it was decided to open this festive happen- ing with a colonial minuet. Every Daughter of the Confederacy was delighted with the idea, while those daughters who were so fortunate as to secure positions in the minuet itself | straightway and delightedly proceeded to study colonial dressmaking. But the minuet could not bea success unless a sufficient number of Sons of the Confederacy or somebody else also participated, and when it became knorn to the young men in question that they would have to appear, so far as their nether limbs were con- cerned, in tightly fitting knee breeches and silk stockings there was a great rush for the woods, ast were. This uulooked-for movement was not the result of modesty, for the young men lived in St. Louis, but was due to the harrowing and undeniable fact that the minuet calls for more calf than at first glance seems to be procurable inthe inner social circle of Missouri dudedom, Did the time permit, this deficiency could be snpplied through a proper gymnastic course, | bat as this ia not possible at such short notice | the gilded but calveless youth of St. Louis have only the iznominious alternatives of either shonning the minuet or of submitting them- selves to the tender mercies of a theatrical cos- tumer., Sno eee ae Senator Chandler, who has given much time to careful study of the immigration problem, declares that an absolute suspension of all im- migration fora period of at least five years wonki bes good thing for the United States. The probabilities are that many of tho immigrative from which we suffer could be reduced to an agree- able minimum by a strict, impartial applica- tion of the present law. The meshes of onr | net are fine enough now. but there are great rents in it, made by practical politicians, who neither fear God nor regard man when the in- crests of party are concerned. | — i If the people who are supposed to inbabit Mars were watching this earth Inst night they | musthave come to the conclusion that globe had collided with three or four ¢ ‘The blame for this misapprehension would have to be laid upon the shoulders of the District | democtacy, who tarned out last night as one | man and made noise enough and shot of | & sufficiency of fireworks for 20,000 men | and an equal number of boys, The; parade was a brilliant affair, thoroughly in| Leeping with the character of the victory which | was being celebrated.
