The Bar Association of the District, as an- nounced im Tux Stan, held a meeting yester- day afternoon in its rooms at the city hall for the purpose of declaring its position as regards appointments to the bench of the Supreme Court of the District, particularly in respect to | the appointment of Judge Jumes’ successor. In the circuit court today a number of cases on the criminal docket were disposed of and the grand jury, having completed its labors, was discharged, after making a report of its proceedings. The jury returned thirty-three true bills against persons for vari- ous offenses. They say they have done all in their power to secure the enforcement of the local option law and call upon the appointing power in the county to select sober and trust- worthy persons to fill the various offices through which the dignity of the law is maintained. There is no prominent disease prevailing and no threatened epidemic, so far as symptoms foreshadow the approach of such a visitation. ‘The deaths during the week amounted to 106 as compared with eighty-six in the previous week, and the death rate correspondingly “arose from 17.2to 21.2 per 1,000 inhabitants. This in- crease is mainly to be attributed to typhoid fever, consumption and acute lung diseases, Ths deaths from these aggregated twenty-three in the preceding week, while during last week they caused thirty-eight deaths.
