A Forecast of What the ©. port Wil Show. + There is more than usual interest attached to the forthcoming annual report of the commis. sioner of pensions for the reason that the pen- sion appropriation figures largely in the annual budget of the government. It has been pretty j well understood for ome time past that the estimates for the next fiscal year would show a large increase. This ex pectation was based on the fact of lange issue of Pensions made during the year. In a few days how the report of pleted and the full statement of the condition of the pension office which will be presented will be read with general interest, The state- will be required for pensions for the next fiscal year will reach the enormous sum of nearly The ork of computing the es has, however, been sufficiently advanced toshow that this estimate is in excess of the actual conditions, LARGER THAN EVER LAST YEAR. During the past year the appropriations for pensions were larger than for any previous | year. In fact ever since the passage of the | disability bill there bas been a rapid yearly in- jerease in the amount needed” to pay the pensions. For the year 1890-91 total appropriation was about £125,000,000. year there was an increase. in |the amount of the a 000,000. But, as Gen. Raum will state in bis report, this amount fell «hort of the actual de- mands by about $18,000,000, so that there is uw deficiency to that ‘extent. Congress | will be asked to make an appropriation of about | £180,000,000 for the coming year, which in- cludes. ‘an estimated increase ‘of about $15,000,000 needed to meet all the demands for the year. NOT SO MUCH AS PREDICTED. be in the near future. | this view argue that the ion appropriation at present is used fn making tho first payment. For exam plc. # man who getya pension under the diss bility law receives on an average £10 per Those who hold month. He is entitled to it not only for the future. but for the past, running back & period of twenty-seven years to the jaate of bis discharg. Ten dollars a month for twenty rs amounts to | quite a neat sum, a: umber of such cases granted is considered it is we understand where the money goes, Now it is maintained that these first payments represent an annual sum of over $50,000,000 and if only the current amount of the pet pard the money needed for the next ¥. be $130,000,000 instead of $150,000,000 GREAT WORK DONE LAST YEAR. Gen. Rifam in his report will call especial tention to the volume of work accomplished t the office during the past year. The great number of more than $11,000 cases were granted during the year. ‘The estimate is also made by those familiar with the work of the pe Democtats Said to Intend Secking Its Ke- peal by the Present Congress, It is understood that there will be an earnest effort made by the democrats to pass through Congress this session the bill repealing the tax on bank currency. ‘There is some fear that Mr. Cleveland may not favor the bill and thst there will be diff culty in carrying out their platform promise on this subject if they wait until he comes into live. It ix thought to be sharp politics to put the republican Seite and President on record as to the meaxure before it is submitted to the democratic administration. The bill will prob- ably be sent to the Senate early this session and an attempt be made to pass it through that body, which, of course, will fail. re Even A NORTH POLE EXPEDITION, Lieut. Peary Given a Leave for Three Years to Head I Secretary Tracy has reconsidered his refusal of the request of Lieut. Peary for three years’ leave of absence, and late Saturday evening signed the order granting the leave. As heretofore published in Tae Star, Lieut. Peary will head an expedition to be sent out by the National Academy of Science of Philadel- phia to endeavor to reach the north pole by the overland ronte through Greenland. While Lieut. Peary is absent on leave he will draw half pay. Sie AN ANTLOPTION FIGHT. One of the Matters That Will Help to Make @ Lively Sessto: There is a promise of a very hard fight over the anti-option bill this session of Congress, ‘There is little doubt that a good majority in the Senate feel bound to vote for the measure, but there is a strongly organized opposition full of “hoe speeches the long agninst it is hoped by those opporod to it that a policy of delay and obstruction may defeat the measure.
