THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. cose aeeeeeMowember 8, 1892. THE EVENING STAR basa regular and permanent circulation tu Washington three times larger than that of any ether paper tn the city. Ae a local NEWS paper and Ad- vertising Medium tt has ne competitor. ——————————— ‘This fs election day. The day when millions of men will shout themselves hoarse for the candidate who will be defeated and when other millions will temporarily lose their voices through efforts to glorify the victor and his ‘cause; when the hopes of one party, perhaps two, will be crushed for four years. All over the great geographical area of the Untred States there is noise and enthusiaam and scheming. Im the cities the clamor of the multitudes has drowned the bum of commercial industry; in the country there is forgetfulness as to crops and indifference in all matters that are non- political. Everywhere except in this city there fe more or less of disturbance; bere only is there absolute calm. It may be that the silence will be fractared even in Washington before midnight, but the chances are that nothing more vital will be broken. For the political parties there ts nothing more to do than await the retarns. Each, according to ite supporters, has eondacted « brilliant and magnificent campaign, has shaken the strong- holds of corruption and foulness to their | foundations, bas assanlted every position held by the frightened enemy, has found encourage- ment im every act of ite opponents, and fs now confident of the victory that must come to the only party that has for ite object. the purifica- tion of the ballot, the uptifting of American manhood, the enlargement of American institu- tions and increased prosperity for the entire nation. In recent presidential contests the public has never had to watch closely more than two oF three doubtful states, and on the rewulte in those commonwealths the popular verdict has hinged, but today the dubiousness is so widely scattered ‘as to make probable « general attack of mental strabiemus. These uncertain spots have all deen indicated by Tie Stan's special corre- spondents, and when the period of doubt has given place to the first moment of certainty the same faithful chroniclers will, through the same medium, «pread abroad the truth, and a great crowd will thie evening read the news as it is | displayed in front of Tar Stax office. Since the incoming of clvil service reform the | {nhabitants of this city view with but little ap- prehension the coming of election day and ite | inevitable muceessor—the fourth day of the | Maroh following. ‘There is no good reason why | any Washingtonian should permit himself to be | unduly excited, and the probabilities a there will be an entire absence of anything more | harmfal then the noises withont which true | partisanship seems to be as nothing. | ‘There will be no real reason for national | grief, no matter which organization comes out | on top. Whatever party wins the greatest re-| public fn all bistory will continue to do busi- ness at the old stand, and the prosperity which | comes of intelligent industry will be ours toa greater degree than ever. Even the collapse of ‘a political party could not more than momenta- rily disturb the national equilibrium. ———__ oe It ie to be hoped that one of the great parties will get s majority of the electoral votes, and that the selection of « President will not be left toa handful of Weaver electors or to » House of Representatives, concerning the constitu- tionality of whose composition without the ad- ditional Representatives allotted under the re- cent census serious question bas been raised. Weaver is conceded the Ne- vada electors (3) and has # good chance to win Colorado (4), Nebraska (8), four im Minnesota and one in Oregon. Other western votes are claimed for him with mote of less confidence. A result of the bal- Joting, which would give him the balance of power in the electoral college, would be no more extraordinary and unexpected than » clear victory for Harrison or Cleveland. The failure of Harrison to secure a majority of the electoral votes would at first glance seem to mean the certain victory of Cleveland by the vote of the House of Representatives. But it has been intimated by some of the third party leaders that some of the Weaver electoral votes would be thrown for Harrison if necessary to defeat Cleveland. The failure of either Cleve- land or Harrison to get a clear majority of the clectors voted for today would, therefore, re- sult in # competitive scramble between republi- cans and democrats for the Weaver electors, in | which previous party affiliations, promises of action on the silver coinage question and perhaps superior pecuniary temptations ad- dremed to individuals might decide the Votes of these elector. Or if they held to Weaver indifferent as to whether or not their course would elect Cleveland, the House, alleged to be unconstitutional in its make up, would be made the arbiter. Let us hope that one eandidate will have a clear majority. We want no repeti- tion in any shape of the experiences of 1876. {| —— | Fifteen republican registere! voters at the New Haven hospital are quarantined, it is said, | on account of the smallpox scare, and if the | nutmeg state is close enongh for their votes to decide the result there may be a chance for an- other contested election case exceeding i in- terest the Inst state election there. +o i ' play if t= mot apt to do so later.
