The party managers of every state are in touch ‘with him and he feels the bubbling of the great Political cauldron. Bright and early this morning came Mr. Montgomery into the telegraph offices, which is Just across the hall from the President's office. A special wire connects this office with the main office of the Western Union Company and gives communication direct be- tween the Executive Mansion and any city. As wires also run into nearly all of the party juarters the President can stand by the inetrument and, with Mr. Montgomery's aid, carry on aconversation with his lteuten- ‘ants in any partof the land. By the time the President has emoked his after-dinner cigar tomorrow and drained his cap cafe of noir the telegraph inatrument will begin ite fateful clicking which will bring exultation or disappointment to the White House, for the news of the result will commence to come tn. People who see the President eay that if he feels any t amount of anxiety be does not show it. He is cool and collected and betrays no sign of worry. Yes,” he continned, “that remark might be regarded as indicative of certainty on my part as to the identity of the next President. The Supreme Court of the United States handed down a number of opinions today, but did not touch the Chicago lake front case. Justice Shiras delivered his maiden decisions in two Philadelphia custom house appraisement cases. Justice Blatchford affirmed a decision of the circuit court of the southern trict of New York in No. 90, a custom house case, with regard to sporting guns imported in pieces. The chief justice announced that in cases 987, 958 and 990 from the state of Illinois (Robie et al.) the mo- tion to dismiss for want of jurisdiction was denied and the judgment of the lower court was affirmed. In the celebrated Michigan election case already decided by the court the chief jnstice read at great length the formal written opinion of the court that the district mode of chooxing | clectore was not obnoxious to the Constitution, but conformed to its original purpose. No other opinions were rendered. eo MR, MILLER NOT APPREHENSIVE. The Attorney General Does not Look for any Trouble at the Poll Attorney General Miller has returned to Washington. He discontinued his efforts in the Indiana campaign last Saturday and the same evening took the train for this city. Coincident with his return the statement is authorized that United States deputy marshals will not wantonly force themselves behind the guard rails at election booths in New York city and will only go beyond the limit pre- scribed by the state law in order to make ar rests or preserve the peace. To a Stax reporter today Attorney General Miller explained the cause of his return. “I thought that I might be of more use here than in Indiana,” he said, ‘tin case of any un- usual events occurring anywhere.” When asked if he really anticipated trouble he replied that he did not; that he relied on the good sense and patriotism of the people in charge of the polling places to prevent violn- tions of law and breaches of the peace.
