It was about an even thing between the tal- ent and the bookies at the Benning track yes- terday, the eighth day of the autumn meeting of the Washington Jockey Club, two favorites and two well-backed kecond choices winning. | ‘The weather was very raw and disagreeable, but the attendance was good, and it was a bet- ting crowd. Since Coroner Patterson went away on his vacation Deputy Coroner Schaeffer has held an inquest nearly every twenty-four hours over some victim of a grade crossing or other violent means of destroying bumai ‘ife. Yesterday the death of Joseph Smallwood was investi- gated. Joseph, who was a six-year-old colored doy, was stealing a ride on the cable cars on 8th Street southeast Saturday, when he fell from the carand received injuries from the effects of which he died yesterday morning, as published in yesterday's Stan. The boy's leg was so badly injured that amputation was necessary, and death resulted from hemorrhage. * ‘The inquest wok held at: the Afch, police sta- tion, and Thomas Keane, the gripman, was pres- ent at the hearing. No ‘one charged careless | ness on the part of the gripman and the proof | showed that the boy was responsible for his own | death, as he was stealing a ride at the time he | met with the fatal accident.
