A few caustic remarks may also be expected from divers Senators and Representatives who were confident they had found temporary places for importunate con- stituents, but now see their fond hopes dashed to the ground. The results will be found to be more serious than the small sum involved might indicate. OMITTED FROM THE SUNDRY CIVIL BILL. The trouble arises out of the omission from the sundry civil bill of an appropriation of $5,000. Whether the item was cut out ina spirit of economy or was left out*by mistake is not known, but the fact remains that the money ‘was not provided. ‘The appropriation was intended to enable the sixth auditors office of the ‘Treasary ment—which audits postmasters’ accounte—to employ twenty people for six months at the rate of $500 per year, to assort several million paid orders which have accumulated and ered that the appropria- tion had been left out of the bill. GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT. Several of the prospective appointees were in an ante room of the Secretary's office at the time and their disappointment was very keen. Some of the remarks dropped by them about the man who omitted the item from the bill | }, could not be considered complimentary even under a most generous interpretation. ‘The omission of the item will cause vexation and delay to thousands of through- out the country who desire settlement of their money order accounts. There are several million of theso money order blanks, repre- senting business transacted at various’ offices, now stacked up in storage rooms of the sixth auditor's office. They must be assorted from the pile and separated into different lots before the uccounts can be checked. This work, with the present inadequate force, will necessitate delay, and in the meanwhile the postmasters ill simply have to grin and bear it. WILL HAVE TO GO. ABig Discharge to Take Place at the Gov- ernment Printing Office. A reduction in the force or employes of the government printing office necessarily follows the adjournment of each Congress. People who are employed on the Congressional Record and in the printing of bills find their occupation gone when the halls of the Senate and House are deserted by the nation’s orators. Just now there is a good deal of guessing being done in the big building at North Capitol and H streets ns to when the discharges will come, but no one seems to have discovered either the date or the number of victims. It is, however, extremely probable that the ax will get a move on itself during the present week, and it is cer- tain that others than those on the Record and night ‘‘bill” forces will be decapitated. Many of the appointees who caught on when the ses- sion work commenced will stay on, and as the capacity of the building is no greater and the sppropristion limited, at least an equal number of men and women employed in other depart- ments must necessarily be discharged. Rumors which have been freely circulated thronghout the building have had it that not lees than five or six hundred people would be notified this week that their services were no longer required, but the rumors are evidently exaggerations. “There will be no more dis- charges than are common at this season. 4 pio deo tear alebeain A LITTLE COOLER.
