As a local NEWS paper and Ad-| Jr aay Yertising Medium It has ne competitor. The attempt on Mr. Frick’s life is atrocious, but there is no occasion to connect with it Girectly the leader of the Homestead locked out men, or any of his associates. On the con- trary. when the mission of Mr. O'Donnell to New York is made known generally, as it is al- ready known to a few, it will be seen how great ‘an injustice has been done to him by the im- plication. The anarchist who shot and stabbed Mr. Frick in his office was evidently such « per- ‘son as Norcross or Guiteau—one who was possi- Diy @ maniac on one subject, but was otherwise fm the full possession of his faculties and who knew that he was committing a crime against the isws and against civilization. The turn of ‘events is unfavorable to the Homestead people. ‘They have blundered where they have not done worse, yet public feeling in this intelligent land is averse to condemning any who have defied the laws, of greater offenses than they have committed. It is not believed that the men of Homestead had anything to do with the act of Bergman at Pittsburg last Saturday. ‘The accidental facts alleged in support of the mere suspicion are not sufficient to cause the public to jump to aconelusion. But it is unfair to inflame the public at such s time against these men, however blameworthy the recent conduct of some of them in maltreating the Pinkerton prisoners. A man may commit ® manslaughter and yet not bea murderer ‘The brutal acts of outaiders and of some of the bereaved women whose husbands had been killed in the encounter with the Pinkerton men are not to be charged wholesale against the leaders in the riot, who did what they could to prevent the night assault on helpless men. The Homestead affair is bad enough. The offenders have placed themselves in the wrong | by the acts ther are known to have per-| petrated—the seizure of the Carnegie Com- pany's property and its perversion to unlawful | ‘uses, the expulsion of the sheriff's deputies, the | firing on persons sent to the mills to protect them, the interference with laborers who were employed by the Carnegies and with other cit- izens in the townof Homestead, subverting the laws and the rights of individuals. For these offenses they are amenable to law. They may not generally be sorry that Mr. Frick is dis- abled by the missiles and blows of the anarchist, but they are not that sort of anarchists, although some of their deeds lead inevitably to anarchy. Public sentiment condemns all their offenses against law and order and maintains the civil authorities in preserving the peace at Homestesd and punishing those who violate it. see ‘Tomorrow the citizens appointed by authority of the citizens’ executive committee in charge of arrangements for the coming G. Twenty thousand dollars more must be raised. ‘This is a matter in which every resident of ‘Washing-on should feel a personal interest and Pride. All the honor and credit for she success of the encampment will come to the people of | Washington, since Congress has decided that | the whole cost shall fall upon them. The suc- cessful accomplishment of the work which has been undertaken by the citizens’ committee will be of benefit to the whole community, and every one in the community should do what he | can to aid the committee. Bergman's deed, while not directly charge- BE: Metal Bolte at 50. able to the men at Homestead or to organized| Ones ‘on all Leather Belts. labor, is due in some measure to methods the locked out men have adopted. If those men| had not attempted by violence to settle their dispute with the Carnegie Company, no outsider iu sympathy with their objects would have re-| sorted to the pistol and the knife in order to | “vindicate the rights” and “redreas the wrongs | Mj of labor.” It is very true that orderly citizens have no sympathy with such acts as Bergman's, | but neither have they with the actaof the Homestead people in resisting the sheriff of Allegheny county, in keeping possesion of ether men’s property by force and arma, even committing homicide to maintain their wrong- ful possession. Such acts as were done at Homestead lead to crime, they lead to anarchy. Itis very well for the advisory committee to pass resolutions of condemnation when anarch- fats ply their profession in such a way as to bring labor agitation into disrepute, but it is indispensable to conduct labor agitation so aa to rebuke and not encourage lawlesaness. The trouble with the agitators is their wholesale and violent abuse of employers as a class, tending to inflame the passions of the laboring peaple, set at defiance the laws of the land and invade the personal rights of the citizen. Instead of apologetic and self-exculpatory statements on such cecasions as this, they should be more care- ful to make them unnecessary. The time for prudence is the beginning of excitement and Rot after the mischief has been done. sa The recent murder on Capitol Hill gives the local police s case that is worthy of their best endeavors. The crime was one of remarkable doldners and the circumstances are such as to indicate that the discovery of the guilty man is entirely possible, though not easy. —__ +e For « young militia man at Homestead to offer cheers for the killing of Frick was indiscreet and deplorabie, but the selection of hanging by the thumbe ass mode of punishment was bar- barous. ———-—+e- —___ Bismarck deciines to refrain from conversa- tion. ‘The emperor may yet remind him forei- biy of the hygienic advantages which attach to keeping the mouth closed. —— cee The strikers at Homestead are the people ‘most burt by the action of the dynamiter, Berg- than He has piaced Mr. Frick on the pedesta of martyrdom. 9 @@ —__ Neotwithstandmg the adjournment of fits greatest form of wefuluess.
