Dimeck and sunk. Allon board the Alva, i lading W. K. Vanderbilt and party, were saved nd taken on board the Dimock. The Alva, | underthe command of Capt. Henry Morrison, left Bar Harbor at 4 o'clock Saturday evening, bound for Newport, having on board the owner and his guests—Frederick W. Vanderbilt, Geo. De Forrest, Louis Webb, Winfield Scott White nd Frank Riggs—all of whom are summering at Newport. Early in the morning a thick fog set in and it became so dense that Capt. Moret, son deemed it imprudent to run further, as the | yacht was then in the track of coasting vessels. After making Pollock Rip lightship anchor was dropped. Whistles and horns were blown j at frequent intervals and every possible pré- caution taken to warn other vessels of the whereabouts of the Alva. The owner and his geste were all alee sping in their berths when they were aroused by a heavy crash, accompa- nied by the tearing of the plates of their vessel. Mr. Vanderbilt wns first on deck, closely fol- lowed by Mr. Riggs. Looming up through the fog they could see the dark hull of « large steamer backing away from oe yacht. The steamer was the H. PF, Dimock, whose stem had . | penetrated the side of, the Alva, staving in the ed bulkheads, The crew of the yacht hailed the steamer and informed the captain the yacht must sink. Capt. A curious result of the Giadstonian victory in the elections is the increase of precautions for the safety of Queen Victoria, ays a London rule no sovereign goos about with less reat precantion than Queen Victoria. Since the elections she has been cordoned with a force of detectives that could hardly be matched out- side of Russia. It is known that Queen Victoria is a thorough tory in principle. She resembles George III in her domestic virtues and in her dislike of anything that tends to diminish the royal authority. The queen is as bitterly op- posed to Irish home rule as George III was'to the independence of the United States. She is confident that home rule will never be granted, and this is another reason why she is beginning to be apprehensive as to her own eecurity, for she dreads that Irish despair and resentment, on finding that home rule is beyond reach, may find expression in violence against the Fi sass: suabins Aeon tushinin, alan! or Teadily seceded to thedesires to Osborne, Si iver fr pet Spoon Aner any her person.
