WASHINGTO soni SATURDAY 6, 189%. | —————— Pane Mums, _| SGSSSSERERSSCERNTSS W Lapses Haxprercmers. ether paper AND NEWS paper and Ad- Ssassbzbabsobsbboed Cuprews | The District Coramissioners believe they see | im the proposed route of the Washington and | Georgetown Terminal Railway Company along | K and Water streets in South Washington a | convenient, practical and inexpensive dispoxi- | tion of the long-existing railroad trouble in| South Washington. This is in part the route that was advocated by Maj. Twining and others | years ago and urged by the South Washington Citizens’ Asociation, but without avail. The | ‘Commissioners, however, go further and sug- | gest a line of track on 6th street from the pres- | ent passenger station to connect with the | tracks on K street. With the support of the District Commissioners the citizens who favor the Kand Water streets route might resume | their efforts with some hope of snecess. A| glance at the city map shows that the route | along K street to Water street and thence to| the Long bridge affords about the easiest and | most direct way from the tunnel at the Navy Yard to the Long bridge. It indeed is some- what surprising that the Pennsylvania Rail- road Company did not long ago vote itself the right of way over these streets to| maintain an easy method of making its through freight connections with the south. ° The line proposed, if it were the onl; line of track main- tained. would, as will be seen by a study of the map, reduce toa minimum the area of the city cut off and more or less injured by the railroad. When the vlan was discussed six years ago the Proposition was made to require the railroad company to purchase its right of way over the intervening squares from the tunnel to Water Street and leave the streets as they now exist, without railroad occupation. It was also pro- posed that the road should be carried on a via- duet over the greater portion of the route, so a to avoid the danger and ntisance of surface tracks and grade crossings. To adopt the new route would be cheaper for the railroad than to make along the streets and avenues now occupied the extensive improvements | to which the company has pledged itself. ‘The feature of the Commissioners’ plan which is likely to provoke the strongest opposition TEFTHIS tesach ® great bargain time that every @opartment tries to render its share of attrac- tiveness.
